Fiji’s George Speight has won a gold medal and set a new Oceania record with a lift of 107.5kg in his third attempt in the Men’s Masters 4 Classic Bench Press at the 2026 Oceania Regional Powerlifting and Bench Press Championships at the FMF Gymnasium.
He beat the previous record of 102.5kg, held by Brian Barrett of New Zealand.
Speight who is coached by Sahil Ram says he was introduced to the sport of powerlifting for health reasons earlier this year in April by his nephew, Samisoni Speight Jnr, who is the Strength and Fitness Coach for the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua.
He says that his nephew told him that it would be good for his muscles and bone structure, as well as longevity.
Speight says Samisoni is his elder brother Sam’s son.
He says Samisoni practices what he preaches, as he is a member of the Fiji powerlifting team as well, and won his category with a gold yesterday.
Speight says Samisoni used to train him and the late Shane Stevens at their driveway in Tamavua.
Powerlifting Fiji says they are incredibly proud of every Team Fiji athlete who stepped onto the platform and gave their very best.
They say the lifters’ dedication, determination and commitment to representing our nation are truly appreciated.
They also thank their sponsors, families, friends, coaches, officials and supporters saying the continued support and encouragement play an important role in making this journey possible.
Powerlifting Fiji says this is only the beginning and they look forward to more exciting performances as Team Fiji continues its campaign.
After Day 1, Team Fiji currently has 20 Gold, 10 Silver, and 6 Bronze.
The competition continues today.
