Venice Beach, CA (The Hollywood Times) 7/5/26 – Few places are as synonymous with bodybuilding as Muscle Beach in Venice, where generations of champions have inspired millions beneath the California sun. This Fourth of July, the annual Mr. and Miss Muscle Beach Championships once again brought together elite competitors, fitness enthusiasts, and spectators to celebrate one of America’s most enduring fitness traditions.
The highlight of this year’s festivities was the presentation of a Lifetime Achievement Award to fitness pioneer Mike Torchia, whose influence on the sport spans more than five decades.
Reflecting on the honor, Torchia recalled the moment that changed his life forever.

“Bodybuilding started, really truly, at Gold’s Gym on Pacific Avenue in Venice, California. I walked into those doors at the age of 15 in 1971 for the very first time.”
That first visit placed him among the legends who would define bodybuilding’s Golden Era. Over the years, Torchia trained alongside icons including Arnold Schwarzenegger, Franco Columbu, Mike Mentzer, Ray Mentzer, Serge Nubret, and Sergio Oliva, stories he happily shared with fans attending the celebration.
With his trademark enthusiasm, Torchia reminded the audience that bodybuilding gave him far more than championship titles.
“Hey, these muscles got me a long way, baby. Not just in titles, but in my career. I became successful because of bodybuilding.”

His message resonated beyond the competition stage. For Torchia, bodybuilding is about much more than building muscle. It teaches discipline, confidence, perseverance, and opens doors to opportunities that extend far beyond the gym.
Looking at today’s competitors, he expressed pride in how the sport has evolved.
“You see these athletes today. They not only have great physiques, but they look healthy, and they’re smiling.”
Before the championships, Torchia welcomed friends and supporters to a celebrity breakfast at Great White in Venice, where attendees enjoyed stories from his remarkable career before making their way to the iconic beachfront venue.

As competitors showcased months, and often years, of dedication on the Muscle Beach stage, spectators celebrated both the athletes of today and the pioneers who helped make Venice Beach the birthplace of modern bodybuilding.
Torchia’s Lifetime Achievement Award recognized not only his accomplishments in the fitness world but also the lasting impact he has had mentoring others and promoting the values of health, determination, and personal growth.

The annual Muscle Beach Championships remain one of Southern California’s most beloved Fourth of July traditions, honoring the sport’s rich history while inspiring a new generation of athletes. For Mike Torchia, the celebration was a fitting tribute to a lifetime devoted to bodybuilding, and a reminder that the greatest transformations often begin with a single step through the doors of a gym.
As Torchia summed it up, bodybuilding is about far more than building a great physique. It is about building a successful life. Judging by the smiles, camaraderie, and admiration on display at Muscle Beach this Independence Day, his message continues to inspire generations of athletes who follow in the footsteps of the legends that made Venice Beach famous.
