Lumding, June 29: More than 70 athletes from across Assam converged in Lumding for the inaugural World Powerlifting Congress (WPC) Assam State Powerlifting Championship, marking the railway town’s debut as the host of the prestigious state-level event.
The championship, which began on June 27 at the auditorium of a prominent institute in the railway town, saw powerlifters from several districts of Assam competing across multiple weight and age categories,
More than 70 male and female athletes are participating, showcasing their strength, technical ability and competitive spirit.
Event organiser Azad Basfore said hosting the championship in Lumding carried special significance, recalling that the town last hosted a powerlifting event nearly two decades ago.
“Nearly 20 years ago, a powerlifting championship was held here. It was a two-day event, and participants had travelled from different places. I would like to thank everyone who has come to Lumding to take part in this championship,” he said.
Besides providing a platform for seasoned competitors, the championship is also aimed at encouraging emerging powerlifters to display their talent while promoting discipline, perseverance and sporting excellence.
Addressing the participants, chief guest Daljit Singh encouraged young athletes to pursue excellence through disciplined training, dedication and the highest standards of sportsmanship.
Organisers expressed confidence that hosting the championship would help popularise powerlifting in the region and inspire more youngsters to take up strength sports competitively.
They also said the successful conduct of the championship has further strengthened Lumding’s credentials as a potential venue for state-level sporting events, paving the way for more such competitions in the future.
