Joseph Baena, the youngest son of legendary bodybuilder Arnold Schwarzenegger, has made a remarkable entry into competitive bodybuilding, sweeping his debut competitions. His success began last month at the National Physique Committee Natural Colorado State Championships, where he secured first place in three categories: Men’s Open Bodybuilding Heavyweight, Men’s Classic Physique True Novice, and Men’s Classic Physique Novice, as reported by latimes.com on April 9, 2026.
Following this initial triumph, Baena continued his winning streak at the International Natural Bodybuilding Assn. (INBA) Iron Gladiator competition in Corona, California, last week. At this event, he again claimed first place in the Classic Physique division and successfully earned his professional card. This achievement paves the way for him to compete in the Professional Natural Bodybuilding Assn. (PNBA) Natural Olympia, the natural equivalent of his father’s renowned competition.
Denise Kakos-Rivas, a representative for the INBA and PNBA, praised Baena’s performance, describing it as “powerful and inspiring.” She highlighted his confidence, charisma, and genuine passion for the sport evident from the moment he stepped on stage. Kakos-Rivas also noted that Baena made himself accessible to fans and fellow athletes off-stage, further cementing his positive impression.
“Winning the Open Classic Physique title and earning his PNBA Pro status marks an exciting milestone in his journey,” Kakos-Rivas stated. She emphasized that while his famous lineage is well-known, Joseph is distinctly establishing his own identity through discipline, dedication, and a commitment to natural competition.
Baena, 28, trains regularly at Gold’s Gym in Venice Beach, a location synonymous with his father’s bodybuilding career. Arnold Schwarzenegger himself has often served as Baena’s workout partner, and the two have been seen practicing the elegant poses that contributed to Schwarzenegger’s stardom. Baena revealed to “Entertainment Tonight” last summer that his father is an early riser, expecting him at the gym by 7 a.m. and not hesitating to express disappointment if he is absent.
Unlike his father, who has been open about past steroid use, Baena has chosen an “au naturel” approach to the sport. Pro bodybuilder and podcast host Victor Martinez commended Baena’s decision to compete naturally first, viewing it as the smartest strategy for long-term success. Martinez emphasized that building a strong foundation without performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) fosters better health and more sustainable progress.
Baena shared that his fitness journey has been extensive. He overcame weight struggles in his youth, starting with swimming and later discovering a passion for weightlifting in college. He recounted, “It wasn’t until my junior year of college, so about eight years ago, that I started lifting weights and fell in love with bodybuilding, seeing the improvement, the muscle gain, the strength gain, and I fell in love with the sport, even watching.”
He continued, “But this year was the year that I said, enough being afraid, enough overthinking, it’s time to commit. Just do a show.” Baena, who also works as a luxury real estate agent, has documented parts of his preparation online, including cooking tutorials focusing on high-protein, easy-to-prepare meals.
Martinez also addressed the immense pressure Baena faces due to his father’s unmatched legacy in bodybuilding. Despite this, Baena’s successful debut and strong performance were lauded as commendable. Ehsan, a co-host on the Generation Iron Podcast, pointed out Baena’s striking resemblance to his father, particularly recalling Arnold’s appearance in “Conan the Barbarian,” from his physique to his long hair.
While Baena has earned his professional card, he must still achieve high placements in upcoming PNBA shows to secure a spot at the Natural Olympia contest, scheduled for November at the Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. His early success indicates a promising future as he carves his own identity within the competitive bodybuilding world.
