World bodybuilding champion announces kidney failure – 03/23/2026 – Muscle – News Room USA

Former bodybuilder Lee Haney announced late Sunday night (22) that he will need to undergo a kidney transplant. Through his Instagram account, the eight-time Olympia champion uninterruptedly between 1984 and 1991 said he is looking for a living donor.

“26 years ago, I was told that I would eventually need a kidney transplant. Through faith, proper nutrition and physical exercise, I was able to manage this situation for many years. Now, my kidney is failing and I deeply hope to be able to find a living donor”, highlights the publication in question. The 66-year-old former athlete also guarantees that he will bear all the costs that the potential donor has in the process.

Asked about the influence of the use of anabolic steroids (EAs) on kidney problems, doctor Vinícius Amaral states that this type of condition is not driven only by the use of these medications, but by the general context: “The problem is not just the use of EAs, but the whole thing. The bodybuilder’s lifestyle. A diet extremely rich in proteins, excessive physical activity [que pode levar a quadros de desidratação]the use of diuretics and other drugs”.

“AEs overload the functioning of the kidney and this overload makes the organ have more difficulty working. The kidney will never stop at nothing. It gradually loses its function, until the moment comes when it practically no longer works”, explains the health professional.

Amaral also highlights risk factors for these organs: “There is the issue of high blood pressure. Hypertension can lead to kidney problems, as can cholesterol — especially LDL. There is also fluid retention.”

Finally, the doctor claims that AEs “deregulate the normal functioning of the body. They alter the hormonal background, increase the metabolic load, generate oxidative stress and force the organs to work above physiological normality.”

Haney was the most dominant Mister Olympia in bodybuilding history, with eight titles in a row. What makes his reign so great is the fact that, unlike Ronnie Coleman and Arnold Schwarzenegger, none of his titles were ever questioned. During his peak, no athlete stood up to him.
