A 90-year-old Japanese bodybuilder, Toshisuke Kanazawa, has amazed people with his remarkable fitness and physical strength, maintaining his form despite his advanced age.
According to international media reports, Kanazawa recently won the over-85 category at the Japan Masters Bodybuilding Championships, taking his total number of national titles to 19.
He also competed in the IFBB World Fitness and Bodybuilding Championships, held in Santa Susanna, Spain, on 30 October. He faced competitors several decades younger than himself. Although he did not secure a place on the podium, his participation was regarded as an outstanding achievement.
Kanazawa credits much of his health and physical strength to a traditional Japanese diet, which he began following at around the age of 50.
His diet includes brown rice, natto, miso soup and raw eggs. He previously drank six protein shakes a day but reduced the number to three as he grew older. He has also given up meat and fish.
He has never smoked or consumed alcohol.
Despite being 90, Kanazawa continues to exercise. He now prefers gym machines, which allow him to control the weights and movements according to his physical ability.
Experts advise older people to exercise according to their health, physical capacity and medical condition.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), people aged 65 and over should take part in muscle-strengthening activities at least twice a week.
