Oklahoma City woman turns devastating injury into powerlifting success

OKLAHOMA CITY –

An Oklahoma City woman who suffered a devastating injury during an ice storm has turned her recovery into a passion for competitive powerlifting.

On Jan. 22, 2024, Karlyn Blumenthal slipped on ice while heading into work.

“I literally took one step out the door. And I was in the air,” Blumenthal said.

The fall left her with a broken femur and a dislocated hip. After surgery, doctors warned that even if she walked again, she would likely have a limp.

“I just started crying. I said, this can’t be the end,” Blumenthal said.

Determined to recover, Blumenthal began physical therapy just days after surgery. During one session, she saw another woman performing an exercise and decided she wanted to try it herself.

“I saw this lady doing a wheel. I was like, I’m doing that. And I did,” she said.

From physical therapy to powerlifting competitions

After completing physical therapy, Blumenthal joined 405 Fortitude Strength and Conditioning, where her determination quickly caught the attention of her trainers.

Her coach encouraged her to consider competing in powerlifting.

About a year after her surgery, Blumenthal entered a powerlifting competition for seniors.

“And I won,” she said.

The experience sparked a new passion.

“I go, when’s my next competition? I’m ready,” Blumenthal said.

With the help of her coach, Chase, she entered the Senior Games, where she deadlifted 225 pounds and won.

That victory qualified her for the Olympia competition in Las Vegas on Sept. 25.

Blumenthal was the oldest competitor in her division but still came out on top.

“And I won by 16 points,” she said.

What began as a devastating injury has become a source of strength and accomplishment for Blumenthal.

“Oh my gosh, I just did that,” she said.

News 9’s Mike Glover shared Blumenthal’s inspiring journey as part of his Something Good series.
