Ukraine will demand an explanation from the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) regarding its decision to hold the 2030 World Championships in Moscow and will consider appealing the decision.

This was reported by “Suspilne Sport.”

The International Weightlifting Federation has granted Russia the right to host the 2030 World Championships for adults in Moscow. This will be the first international sporting event of this level under the auspices of an Olympic federation in Russia since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Dmytro Sukhotsky, head coach of Ukraine’s national weightlifting team, called the federation’s decision “very unexpected” and emphasized that it has caused outrage among Ukrainian athletes.

“The decision to hold the World Championships in Moscow is very painful for us. Russian sports have long since begun returning to the international arena, but the decision to grant Russia the right to host world championships is a much more serious step.”

According to Dmytro Sukhotsky, such a decision could set a dangerous precedent for other international sports federations.

Ukraine will expect explanations from the IWF, specifically regarding whether the federation took into account the safety of Ukrainian athletes should they participate in competitions in Moscow.

If the World Championships are not moved from Moscow, the Ukrainian national team’s participation in the tournament remains in question.

As a reminder, Moscow was selected as the host city for the 2030 World Championships in an Olympic sport. This marks the first time since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine that the Russian Federation has been entrusted with hosting a competition of such a high level.
