A Whiteness teenager has received parliamentary recognition for her achievement at a power lifting world championship.

Lauri Siegel, 17, won the silver medal in the junior female section of the Static Monsters World Championship event in Phoenix, Arizona, last month.

This week Northern Isles MP Alistair Carmichael invited members of the House of Commons to congratulate her on her success on the international stage.

Mr Carmichael called it an “outstanding achievement”.

Siegel, who was confirmed as a nominee at next month’s Shetland Sports Awards, first took up power lifting at the start of the year.

She then qualified for the world championships at her first competitive event in February.

The Liberal Democrat MP said Siegel had made “remarkable progress”.

Speaking to The Shetland Times last month, Siegel said she was delighted to have made Shetland and Scotland “proud”.

The 17-year-old said the event was “definitely something I’ll never forget”.

The event saw Siegel successfully lift 50kg and 55kg on the log press, the 60kg proved a little too much.

She lifted 145kg on the 18-inch axle deadlift, but a no-lift referee decision followed her second 155kg attempt.

A combined total of 200kg earned Siegel second place and a silver medal.

Siegel said none of this would have been possible without her personal trainer and coach Shauna Moar, and Bryan Pearson, who has been “absolutely amazing and is always encouraging me”.

Last week Moar said Siegel has a “big career” ahead of her, if she sticks with her training.

The 38-year-old said she can see similarities between herself and the young Siegel.

But what stands out most is Siegel’s “passion, drive and determination”.
