Cleethorpes’ Cameron brings home gold from Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships in Canada

An 18-year-old lifeguard from Cleethorpes has just enjoyed the “very exciting” experience of picking up gold at the Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships. Competing for England in the sub-junior under 66kg weight category in Winnipeg, Canada, Cameron Wass took gold in the squat, silver in the deadlift and bronze in the bench press disciplines.

His performance earned him overall gold in his weight category and neither Cameron, nor his mum Amanda, could be prouder. Cameron, who only stepped onto the competitive platform for his very first event in February, said: “It was very exciting, I was quite nervous on the day; you line up in the corridor and you’re looking at all your rivals standing in front of you and behind you.”

Cameron said: “I did want a little bit more on the day of the competition. I got ill on the plane going out and it took me days to recover – on the day of the Championships I was still quite poorly, so that was me at my worst and I still managed to win gold.”

Cameron travelled to New York for a few days afterwards to celebrate, seeing all the sights. “It’s been on my bucket list for a while,” he said.

“I’m back at work [at Haven in Cleethorpes] and now in preparation for the British Nationals in April.” Cameron, who has previously said his aim is to be world powerlifting champion, added: “I’d like to tell people, follow your dreams.”

He also said he was “forever grateful” to all his followers for showing their support for him. “I think that it does motivate me knowing I have all these people in my corner.”

One of them is his mum, Amanda, who travelled with Cameron to see him compete in Canada. She said it had been a “huge honour” for her son to be invented to represent his country and to then go in and bring home gold for England.

“He did so well; he absolutely smashed it,” she said. “I’m immensely proud of Cameron.
