According to the foreign media outlet The Mirror recently, Ian Lloyd, 59 years old, had experienced abdominal pain and bloating for years. He was diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome at a hospital and took medication with every meal, but his symptoms persisted. Having previously worked as a bodybuilder, he ate 10 eggs a day to consume protein and sometimes ate eight scrambled eggs in a single meal. He also consumed about 220 g of protein a day, equivalent to approximately seven chicken breasts.
Ian Lloyd continued these eating habits even after retiring, and four years ago he began experiencing symptoms including bloating, severe gas and frequent diarrhea. His weight also no longer came off as easily as it had before. He said, “At some point, I stopped losing weight easily.”
After undergoing detailed tests to identify the cause, Ian Lloyd learned through a food intolerance test that he had a food intolerance to eggs. He said, “Because I had eaten eggs every day for years, I never thought eggs could be the problem,” adding, “I stopped eating all the foods that were identified as problematic in the test, including eggs.” It appears that Ian Lloyd’s symptoms worsened because he consumed excessive amounts of eggs every day despite having an intolerance to them.
Food intolerance refers to a condition in which the digestive system cannot properly process a particular food, resulting in various uncomfortable symptoms. According to a review paper published in the international journal ‘Nutrients’, food intolerance mainly causes functional gastrointestinal symptoms such as bloating, abdominal pain and diarrhea, and the foods that trigger symptoms vary from person to person.
After stopping his egg consumption, Ian Lloyd’s physical condition changed significantly. He said, “I stopped eating the scrambled eggs I used to have every morning and ate other protein-rich foods,” adding, “I was shocked when I learned which foods were causing the problem, but within a few weeks afterward, I lost 6 kg and have maintained the healthiest physical condition I have ever experienced.”
If similar symptoms recur whenever you eat a particular food, it is important to identify the cause through a medical consultation rather than unconditionally cutting out that food.
