A Japanese bodybuilder, who continues his active career at the age of 90, won his 19th career championship at the top of the competition.

According to local media such as Japan’s Fuji TV-affiliated FNN Prime Online and TV Shin Hiroshima, Toshisuke Kanazawa (90), who runs a gym in Hiroshima, won the 85-year-old Japanese Masters Championship held on the 30th of last month as the youngest person to win.

This victory marks Kanazawa’s 19th career victory at the top of Japan. He won 17 Masters championships and two Japanese championships.

Kanazawa said in an interview with TV Shin-Hiroshima, “I learned again at the age of 90 that people have to endure even when they are old,” adding, “I was able to win my 19th championship because I kept running with the mindset that I didn’t want to lose in life.”

Kanazawa started bodybuilding when he was 20 years old. He has been working out for about 70 years since he jumped into body building after starting muscle training to train his body.

Even after turning 90, he still performs intense training every day. They train for two hours a day by dividing the exercise parts by day, and focus on stimulating the muscles intensively to make them tired enough.

Diet management is also thorough. Kanazawa has maintained a Japanese-style diet centered on rice, miso shiru (Japanese soybean paste soup), and natto since the age of 50. Recently, I also eat blueberries every day.

Kanazawa cited ‘meal’ as the most important factor in maintaining health. “The food we eat becomes blood and makes muscles,” he said. “Eating is important because the root needs to be healthy.”

Originally, his goal was to become an active bodybuilder by the age of 90. Having achieved its goal, Kanazawa is now turning to a world record.

“If I can stay active until I’m 93, I want to set a world milestone,” he said.

Currently, the world’s oldest male bodybuilder recognized by Guinness World Records is Jim Arrington of the United States. In 2022, at the age of 90 years and 38 days, he participated in a professional bodybuilding competition and set a record.

Kanazawa is also scheduled to participate in the Japanese Men’s Bodybuilding Championships on the 11th of next month.
