SIBU (Sept 20): The Sibu Division Bodybuilding and Weightlifting Association (SDBWA) plans to expand its community-based fitness programmes to senior citizens, youths and youth-focused organisations so as to encourage more people to exercise and lead healthier lifestyles.

In this regard, State Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang welcomes the association’s inclusive community-oriented approach, adding that he is encouraged by its plans to offer attractive packages as a way to bring in more people into the gym.

“In this respect, I really congratulate the association for always having the community in their mind.

“And as a YB (people’s representative) for Pelawan (constituency) here, I will continue to support the association,” Tiang told reporters when met after officiating at the grand open day of the SDBWA Gym here on Saturday.

He also noted the SDBWA had maintained its community-based principle despite the relocation of its gym from Sibu Civic Centre due to renovation.

“I learned that the association’s gym was among the first gyms in this riverine town, having been set up in the early 1980s.”

Stressing the importance of health, he encouraged people to exercise.

“A country cannot be strong if people are not fit and healthy.

“That’s why as Deputy Minister for Public Health, (Housing and Local Government) Sarawak, I urge everyone to go to the gym,” he said.

Also present were SDBWA president Chia Soon Cheong and its secretary Martin Voon.
