The stage in Las Vegas is slowly taking shape, and the pressure on the defending champion is immense. Derek Lunsford, who previously shocked the world with his move from the 212 division to the premier Open category, is currently the main target of all challengers. To retain the Sandow Trophy, he must bring even more definition and muscle hardness to the stage this year. His latest leg workout proves that he’s working hard on exactly that.
The four weeks leading up to the competition are a critical period known as the “death zone.” Energy levels are at rock bottom due to the caloric deficit, but the intensity of his workouts must not drop. Even at this stage, Lunsford displays incredible determination and strength.
Precise Technique and Isolation Come First
In his latest video, Derek shows that building legs worthy of the Mr. Olympia title isn’t just about mindlessly loading plates onto the bar. The workout is built on absolute control of movement, maximum stretch, and brutal contraction.
The training routine included:
- Seated and Lying Hamstring Curls: Lunsford almost always starts his leg workout with hamstring isolation exercises. This strategy drives a massive amount of blood into the legs and warms up the knee tendons before heavy squats.
- Leg Press with an emphasis on depth: Instead of classic squats, which can unnecessarily strain the lower back toward the end of a workout, Derek opts for massive volume on the Leg Press with a slow negative phase.
- Leg Extensions: For final refinement and quadriceps isolation. Here, Derek often uses drop sets to push the muscles past the point of failure.
- Walking Lunges: The perfect finishing exercise to engage the glutes and fully exhaust the lower body.
Lunsford appears incredibly focused. Every repetition serves a purpose, and deep grooves are already taking shape on his quadriceps, promising a spectacular final physique.

Intense leg workouts require thorough recovery
Training your legs at such intensity—especially while in a caloric deficit—means subjecting your body to extreme stress. After heavy lifts and drop sets, your muscle fibers are literally torn at the microscopic level. If you don’t provide your body with the right nutrients at this point, not only will you fail to gain muscle, but you’ll also risk losing the hard-earned muscle mass you’ve built and unnecessarily prolong muscle soreness.
The key to success on leg-training days is a solid dose of energy before your workout. A high-quality pre-workout supplement will help you overcome fatigue and keep your mind focused even when you’re running out of breath. During the workout itself, champions rely on intra-workout drinks containing EAAs and carbohydrates, which protect muscles from catabolism and delay exhaustion. And as soon as you put down the last dumbbell, you must immediately consume a highly absorbable hydrolyzed protein, which will instantly kickstart the repair processes.
Don’t let your efforts at the gym go to waste—reward your body with the best nutrition!
