Jay Cutler (53) and Hany Rambod are working out their legs

Jay Cutler is living proof that peak physical condition doesn’t have to fade away with retirement from bodybuilding. At 53, he undeniably maintains the fullness and definition of the muscles that earned him four Mr. Olympia titles in the past. In a new video from September 7, Jay teamed up with Hany Rambod, and together they tackled a leg workout inspired by Cutler’s historic 2009 comeback, when he stunned the world with his famous “Quad Stomp.”

Hamstrings Always Come First

The workout didn’t start with grueling squats right off the bat. Jay explained that he always begins his lower-body training with the hamstrings, without exception.

“I always start with hamstrings, guys. I always do the back of the thighs first because my quads are already super dominant. That way I get an insane pump in my hamstrings and glutes,” Cutlerrevealed , adding that he’s extremely afraid of losing glute mass.

The workout consisted of the following isolation and compound exercises:

  • Seated leg curls and single-leg kneeling leg curls
  • Romanian deadlifts with dumbbells
  • Front kicks
  • Hack squats and squats on the belt-squat machine
  • Hip abduction on the machine

While performing front kicks, Cutler admitted that he no longer feels the need to constantly change his routine or look for special machines—he now performs every leg workout in exactly the same order.

Hacken Squats: The Secret to Building Outer Muscle Mass

During hack squats, Rambod noticed an interesting detail. Jay’s right heel tended to roll inward due to a previous injury and reduced flexibility. Rambod advised viewers that if they have a similar problem, they must consciously focus on pushing their heel back out to compensate for the reduced mobility. Cutler also singled out hack squats as the absolutely crucial exercise that helped him build that massive outer quad arch and deep muscle separation throughout his career.

Timeless physique requires a professional approach

Maintaining massive muscle mass and avoiding chronic pain even after turning 50 isn’t a matter of luck, but of precise recovery. Heavy weights take a toll on the joints, especially after decades of extreme strain. If you want to build muscle mass and protect your knees, you must provide your body with proper nutrition.

The foundation for healthy movement lies in proven, comprehensive joint supplements that maintain the elasticity of tendons and reduce cartilage wear. After a grueling leg workout, you shouldn’t skip a rapidly digestible whey isolate, which immediately stops catabolism and delivers building blocks. To maximize recovery in older athletes or after extreme exhaustion, it’s also worth turning to natural adaptogens or boosters that optimize hormonal balance.

Train smart, focus on form, and don’t let injuries take you out of the game!
