Seven years after making his competitive debut, Jonathan Jeffrey has reached the summit of regional bodybuilding, striking gold for Guyana at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Bodybuilding and Fitness Championships in Guatemala.
Jeffrey captured the Men’s Physique title in the up to 176cm category, crowning a remarkable seven-year saga of resilience.
His journey began in 2019 with a fourth-place finish at the domestic Novice Championships, before he claimed the novice title a year later.
Four consecutive runner-up finishes at ‘Mr. Guyana’ followed, along with years of incremental progress on the regional stage.
After placing fifth at the 2022 CAC event in Barbados and fourth last year in St. Lucia, Jeffrey delivered the performance of his career in his third appearance at the championships to finally secure the gold medal.
Jeffrey’s triumph spearheaded an impressive campaign for Team Guyana, who returned home on Monday following a strong showing across multiple divisions.
Veteran competitor Rawl Green claimed a silver medal after competing across the Under 85kg, Masters 50+, and Classic Physique categories.
Sabitha Stephen added to the nation’s medal haul by securing bronze in the Bikini division, while Melitha Anderson narrowly missed out on a podium spot, taking fourth place in the Wellness competition.
The squad in Guatemala was supported by coach Fyzal Bacchus, judge Nathan Wilburg, CAC representative Kevon Bess and Videsh Sookram as acting president of the Guyana Body Building and Fitness Federation (GBBFF).
The team’s campaign received backing from Guyana’s Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, the National Sports Commission, and the Guyana Olympic Association, marking another step forward for the country’s growing presence on the international fitness stage.
