Phil Heath on Mr. Olympia 2026

There are less than four weeks left until the “Super Bowl” of bodybuilding in Las Vegas. On August 29, seven-time Mr. Olympia champion Phil Heath spoke about Nick Walker’s chances of winning the title and what might prevent Samson Dauda from returning to the bodybuilding throne.

At last year’s Mr. Olympia competition in 2025, both of these favorites struggled. Samson Dauda, nicknamed the “Nigerian Lion,” lost his title to Derek Lunsford and fell to fourth place. Nick Walker, on the other hand, misjudged the timing of his peak form and finished as low as sixth—his worst result at Mr. Olympia to date.

Both competitors have thus chosen different paths this year to return to the top. While Dauda undertook a long off-season preparation to regain his lost muscle mass, Walker competed in this year’s 2026 Arnold Classic, where he narrowly lost to Andrew Jacked and took silver. Recently, however, he secured his qualification with a dominant victory at the 2026 Tampa Pro.

Nick Walker and His Chances at the Title

In his video, Phil Heath explained that Walker has everything it takes to win the most prestigious title, but he warned of the fierce competition.

“I told him he did great in Tampa, and I asked if he could do even better. He said yes. I told him to show it on both days of the competition. If he can pull it off on Friday and Saturday, he’ll be in the running for the title,” Heath revealed .

The legendary bodybuilder also pointed out that rivals like Derek Lunsford, Andrew Jacked, and Samson Dauda are currently in great shape, and the key factor will be for everyone to stay healthy.

What’s holding Samson Dauda back?

As for Dauda, Heath doesn’t think we’ve seen his absolute peak yet, adding that he needs to be in much better shape this year than he was in 2024. According to Heath, Samson Dauda’s Achilles’ heel is his final, rock-hard, and maximally defined physique.

“I’m not saying Samson doesn’t look good. But his biggest enemy has always been achieving perfect definition. If he can pull that off with the massive size he has, he’ll be incredibly hard to beat,” Heath said, assessing the British competitor’s situation.

The Details That Determine the Outcome

In his assessment, Phil Heath repeatedly points out that at this level, it’s no longer just muscle mass that matters, but the details—timing of peak condition, maximum definition, and the body’s ability to withstand an enormous workload. Extreme training and strict diets take their toll, which applies to both pros and anyone who takes their preparation seriously.

When you’re trying to reduce body fat to a minimum, as Heath discusses in relation to Dauda, it’s crucial to preserve muscle mass and avoid adding unnecessary calories to your diet. At this stage, it makes sense to opt for the purest possible source of protein. Whey isolate, such as BioTechUSA Iso Whey Zero, is ideal for this purpose because it provides the body with rapidly absorbed nutrients without unnecessary fat or lactose.

Maintaining strength and focus toward the end of a demanding training period is often a mental battle. On days when your body is running low on natural energy, a high-quality pre-workout supplement can help you overcome fatigue. A tried-and-true classic is GymSupps XPre Workout, which helps you stay focused on your workout without having to rely solely on willpower.

And as Heath himself pointed out, the most important thing of all is to stay healthy. Your body’s ability to recover determines how hard you’ll be able to train tomorrow. Incorporating complex amino acids, such as Big Zone Bulletproof EAA’s, helps speed up muscle fiber recovery between workouts. After all, the best results aren’t achieved solely under the barbell, but primarily during the moments when your body is resting properly.
