Breaking Barriers: Ephraim Gudgeon Becomes New Zealand’s First IFBB Wheelchair Pro
Ephraim Gudgeon’s rise to becoming New Zealand’s first IFBB Wheelchair Pro bodybuilder is a powerful story of resilience. A top-five teenage swimmer in New Zealand, Gudgeon was always an elite athlete. However, in February 2017, his life dramatically shifted when a waterfall diving accident fractured his T12 vertebra, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down.
Refusing to let the injury define him, Gudgeon channeled his focus into the gym. Weightlifting offered a sense of control and structural normalcy during recovery. Shifting his athletic ambitions to competitive bodybuilding, his dedication paid off rapidly. Just months after his injury, he won the 2017 NZWBBF Nationals. In May 2019, Gudgeon won first place at the Toronto Pro Qualifier, earning his IFBB Pro Card and breaking barriers as Aotearoa’s inaugural professional wheelchair athlete. His ascent reached historic heights in August 2026, when he secured victory at the IFBB Texas Pro Men’s Wheelchair competition, officially qualifying him for the iconic Mr. Olympia stage.
Competing on the world stage comes with significant financial hurdles for an adaptive athlete traveling from Aotearoa. To make his historic appearance at the Mr. Olympia weekend in Las Vegas possible, Gudgeon has launched a community campaign to help cover expenses for long-haul international travel, specialized accommodation, support care, athlete registration, and competition preparation. By stepping onto that stage, he aims not only to represent New Zealand at the highest pinnacle of the sport, but also to make history as the first Māori and Kiwi wheelchair bodybuilder to compete at Mr. Olympia.
