Johannesburg, Aug. 21 (SANA) Syrian national powerlifting team member Mohamed Safwamar won four gold medals at the World Sub-Junior and Junior Powerlifting Championships currently underway in South Africa.
Competing in the over-120-kilogram category, Safwamar won gold in the squat with a 340-kilogram lift, bench press with 250 kilograms and deadlift with 280 kilograms, in addition to gold in the overall standings, according to the Ministry of Sports and Youth.
Syrian teammate Mergan Haji also won four medals in the junior women’s 57-kilogram category, taking gold in the squat and deadlift, silver in the bench press and gold in the overall standings.
The Syrian delegation includes Safwamar and Haji, coach Mazen Dmeiriyeh and delegation head Sami al-Barni.
The Ministry of Sports and Youth said Syria’s participation comes as part of the championship’s approved age and weight categories, with athletes from more than 50 countries taking part.
The championships are being held in South Africa from August 16 to 29, 2026.
