Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Sommerfeld.
Hi Mike, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was 11 years old when I decided I wanted to become a professional bodybuilder. While other kids changed their minds every few months, my dream never changed. From that day on, I had one goal: to become Mr. Olympia
I grew up around bodybuilding through my father who was a bodybuilder himself. I, stepped onstage for the first time as a teenager, and never looked back. Every year, every off-season, every prep, and every decision was made with that one vision in mind: not just to compete, but to become one of the best in the world.
In 2018 I earned my IFBB Pro Card in London, and found my home in Classic Physique. Working with my coach, Neil Hill, has been an important part of that journey. Together, we kept building year after year, and I worked my way onto the Olympia stage, climbed into the top ranks of the sport, finished back to back runner-up Mr. Olympia in 2024 and 2025, and won the Arnold Classic in 2025.
Today, I’m fortunate to be living the life I dreamed about as an 11-year-old. But I don’t see those achievements as the finish line, they’re proof that the vision I had as a kid was possible. My goal hasn’t changed. I’m still chasing the same dream with the same conviction: to become Mr. Olympia.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No journey to the top is ever smooth, and mine certainly wasn’t.
Bodybuilding is a sport where success is measured in years, not months. You have to keep showing up every single day, even when nobody is watching and there are no guarantees that the work will pay off. I’ve always understood that this is part of the process. It has taught me discipline, patience, and responsibility. Those lessons have shaped every part of my life—not just what happens on stage. There were definitely moments where progress felt slow and the sacrifices felt heavy, but I never questioned the goal.
For more than four years, my wife and I have spent most of our time traveling the world for competitions, training, seminars, and appearances. Living out of suitcases, adapting to different time zones, preparing meals in hotel rooms, and staying on track in airports became our everyday life. It may look exciting from the outside, but the reality is that consistency doesn’t stop just because you’re constantly on the move.
The biggest challenge has never been one specific moment, it has been maintaining the same standard every single day, year after year. Staying focused, continuing to improve, and making the right decisions when nobody is watching. That’s what separates people who dream about success from those who are willing to build it.
I’m incredibly grateful that I don’t have to do this journey alone. Having my wife by my side through every prep, every flight, every challenge, and every milestone has made all the difference. Looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing, and I’m convinced the best is still ahead.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Today, I wear several different hats, but they all revolve around the same passion: helping people become the best version of themselves.
First and foremost, I’m an IFBB Professional Classic Physique athlete competing at the highest level of the sport. Every season, my goal is to keep improving and compete for the Mr. Olympia title.
Alongside competing, coaching has become one of the most rewarding parts of my career. I work closely with athletes and lifestyle clients from all over the world, creating individualized training, nutrition, and performance strategies. I’m very detail-oriented and believe that long-term success comes from precision, consistency, and understanding the individual rather than relying on shortcuts or trends.
I’m also proud to represent brands that I genuinely believe in as a brand ambassador, and over the years I’ve built and invested in several businesses inside and outside the fitness industry. Entrepreneurship has become another passion because it allows me to build something that lasts beyond my competitive career.
Whether I’m preparing for the Olympia, coaching a client, working with a brand, or building a business, my approach is always the same: give everything I have, focus on the details, and never stop improving.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I don’t rely on one specific book, podcast, or app. My biggest resource is the people around me.
I’m fortunate to have a very small but trusted inner circle. I speak with my coach, Neil Hill, almost daily, and my wife is involved in every part of my career and business. Having people around me who challenge my thinking, give honest feedback, and share the same standards is something I value more than any single resource. Some of the best lessons I’ve learned have come from conversations rather than content.
For coaching, we’ve also built our own app, which allows us to analyze client data, monitor progress, and communicate efficiently. I’m a big believer in systems because they help create consistency—not only for myself but also for the people I coach.
Beyond that, I enjoy learning from scientific research, conversations with high performers in different industries, and simply staying curious. I believe the best ideas often come from exchanging perspectives with people who are constantly trying to improve.
