Dorian Yates isn’t slowing down since stepping away from competitive bodybuilding. In an August 3 Instagram post, the bodybuilding legend showed off his ripped physique and shared the fitness routine behind his longevity.
In the Men’s Open class, Yates was a pioneer. He adopted training principles founded by the late Arthur Jones and Mike Mentzer. Their high-intensity training system focused on achieving failure rather than chasing an arbitrary number of repetitions.
This approach worked. Yates cemented his status as a six-time Mr. Olympia champion. However, training well into his sixties requires different training methods than he used in his prime. From yoga and biking to cold plunges, innovation is key to his functionality offstage.
Dorian Yates, 64, Reveals the Fitness Routine Responsible for His Longevity
In the Instagram post, Yates credited his genetics for helping him stay naturally lean throughout the years. He revealed that he has altered his fitness routine to complement longevity instead of bodybuilding goals.
“A few of the things I do to stay in shape in my 60s! I’ve always naturally been pretty lean, even when I was in my teens, I always had abs. Even right through to being 300+ lbs, I still had my abs visible. Obviously my goals now aren’t bodybuilding orientated, but geared towards longevity and making sure I can still do the things I love in 20 years time.”
According to Yates, weight training is the strongest foundation of health available:
“I still do some weight training because I believe the foundation of any health approach as you get older is number 1, weight training in my opinion.”
Additionally, he listed the sauna, cold plunges, biking, HIIT, and yoga as other effective methods for remaining healthy.
“Sauna, cold plunges, biking, hiking, HIIT, yoga and more… exercise in some way shape or form will always be a part of my life,” Dorian Yates shared.
Fans in the comment section gave their thoughts on Yates’ current form:
“One of the best most honest role models of the sport. No other has challenged their ego like you have! And chose health and longevity over more Olympia titles. 🔥 stay blessed ❤️”
“Best calves ever!!!”
“Dorian looking a lot bigger than when he was on JRE 💪”
“Honestly this guy ! Just unbelievable. Still looks like he’s carved out of solid rock and just living. 🔥
No figure of speech. The Goat !”
After leaving the sport on top, fans have wondered which supplements fueled his legendary career. He recently shared that a milk and egg protein supplement, amino acids, and creatine were all fundamental tools to his success.
Yates is open to trying all forms of exercise since stepping into retirement. He believes changing his fitness routine after competing has helped him age with grace.
