How bodybuilding helped Bokang Matsetela find her purpose

What began as a personal search for direction has developed into a series of bodybuilding titles for North-West University (NWU) student Bokang Matsetela. In just two years, the fourth-year economics student has progressed from entering her first competition to standing among the country’s top university bodybuilders, proving that discipline can shape more than physical strength.

Originally from Ga-Mothibi in the North West Province and raised in Midrand, Gauteng, Bokang joined bodybuilding in 2025 with no expectation of becoming a champion. Instead, she was looking for a way to challenge herself.

“It was a question of trying to find myself. The sport inspired me to deal with uncertainty and turn it into something real through discipline,” she says.

Her decision paid off almost immediately. During her debut season in 2025, Bokang won the Bikini Over 164 cm category at the University Sport South Africa (USSA) Championships and went on to finish third at the South African Championships.

She returned in 2026 to claim both the Bikini Over 166 cm title and the Overall Bikini title at the USSA Championships, contributing to another successful campaign for the NWU Mahikeng bodybuilding team.

The power of perseverance

Although the medals mark milestones in her sporting career, Bokang says she prefers to view bodybuilding as a means for continuous personal growth.

“Both the USSA and South African Championships mean the most to me because each achievement reflects every hard set, every meal and every version of myself that chose to keep going.”

Balancing competitive bodybuilding with the demands of completing an economics degree requires careful planning and consistency. Bokang says the lessons she has learned in the gym have carried over into every aspect of her life.

“In bodybuilding you develop self-discipline, and when applying it to other areas of your life, it helps you create an environment where you thrive. But most importantly, having people around you that support and understand what you’re doing is the cheat code,” she says.

Her achievements have also contributed to the continued success of the NWU Mahikeng bodybuilding programme, which has established itself as one of the leading university teams in the country.

As South Africa celebrates Women’s Month in August, Bokang hopes her story will encourage other young women to believe in their potential, even when the path ahead is uncertain.
