At the ongoing Commonwealth Games, India’s Rishikanta Singh Chanambam won the silver medal in the Men’s 60kg weightlifting event in Glasgow today. Rishikanta lifted 121kg in the snatch, setting a new Commonwealth Games record before Malaysia’s Mohamad Aniq Kasdan equalled the mark. However, the Indian managed 143kg in the clean and jerk, finishing with a combined total of 264kg. Malaysia’s Mohamad Aniq Kasdan clinched the gold medal with a Commonwealth Games record total of 273kg, while Joshua Amunga Mboya of Kenya secured the bronze with an overall lift of 260kg. The silver medal is India’s second medal at this year’s Commonwealth Games and first in an able-bodied event.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Indian weightlifter Rishikanta Singh Chanambam for winning a Silver Medal at the Glasgow Commomwealth Games and also achieving his personal best at the event. In a social media post, the Prime Minister said, Mr Chanambam’s determination and outstanding performance have brought immense joy to the nation. He also wished that the Indian weightlifter continues to scale greater heights and inspire many young athletes.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah congratulated weighlifter Rishikanta Singh Chanambam on winning the Silver Medal. In a social media post, Mr Shah said that he has made the nation proud with his victory. The Minister wished him success for his future.
