A native of Bathinda, Punjab, Jaspreet Kaur’s journey to para powerlifting began far from the sport. After contracting polio at the age of three, she went on to complete an M.Tech and worked as a software engineer, but a sedentary desk job saw her weight balloon to nearly 80kg, putting severe pressure on her body. Determined to reclaim her health, she quit her job, joined a gym, and discovered para powerlifting in the process, shedding close to 40kg in 18 months.Today, the 32-year-old trains under Athens 2004 Paralympic bronze medallist Rajinder Singh Rahelu at the National Centre of Excellence in Gandhinagar. Since breaking the national record with a 101kg lift, she has gone on to win an international medal and earned selection for both the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games, a journey she describes as one that began with a simple goal of getting fit.Career BestJaspreet produced the best lift of her career at the Khelo India Para Games 2025 in New Delhi, lifting 101kg in the women’s 45kg category to win gold and set a new national record, surpassing her own previous best of 100kg set just a week earlier.Commonwealth Games DebutThe 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow will mark Jaspreet Kaur’s debut at the event, where she becomes one of India’s inspiring new faces in para powerlifting.
