Building Muscle, Building Community: Ops Gym Hosts Third Annual Powerlifting Competition

Outside the bar room or the church house it can be hard to meet new people and form new friendships as an adult. That’s part of the reason I’m fascinated with subcultures that form around unexpected and nontraditional ways for people to meet and form bonds.

So when Monica Cahalen with Osborn Performance Systems (or Ops) in Wenatchee, the region’s only gym totally dedicated to powerlifting, reached out to me to let me know they were hosting a powerlifting meet this month I marked my calendar.

Not only is powerlifting a visually-interesting subject to capture on video, but it’s also an interesting subculture. This year 37 athletes came to compete, one from as far away as Tennessee. What I found especially impressive was the woman with crutches in the adaptive category who came out and deadlifted, and the 80-year-old woman who also came to compete.

It’s also impressive to see the community that Cahalen and Dave Osborn, owner of Ops, is building out of their space in downtown Wenatchee.

YFor the full story watch the video above and if you’re interested in lifting heavy things with cool people, you can learn more about Ops on their website here.
