When Adam Northover stepped onto the stage at the NAC Bodybuilding World Championships in Latvia, he was competing against the very best athletes in the world.
Every man standing alongside him was a national champion. The standard was exceptional, the margins razor-thin and the pressure immense.
By the end of the competition, the Bourne-based fitness coach had secured fifth place in the world in the Masters Over-40s category while representing Team UK – an achievement many athletes would regard as the pinnacle of their sporting career.
Yet despite the prestige of competing on bodybuilding’s biggest stage, Northover insists his proudest moments are often found far away from the spotlight.
“Whilst I’m proud of my achievements on stage, I’m even prouder of what we’ve built at Evolve,” he said.
“We’re not just changing physiques, we’re helping people become better versions of themselves.”
Northover is the owner of Evolve, The Body Transformation Specialists, an online coaching business that has grown rapidly since its launch in 2018.
The company, which helps men and women improve their health, fitness and confidence, currently supports more than 100 clients and has recently been shortlisted as a finalist in the Health & Wellbeing Small Business category at the Peterborough Small Business Awards.
The recognition comes during what has already been a remarkable few weeks for the coach, athlete, husband and father.
Not only did he successfully defend his NAC UK Masters bodybuilding title before heading to Latvia, but two of his clients also enjoyed major victories of their own.
Brad Hollingsworth, one of Evolve’s competitive athletes, won both the Junior and Novice bodybuilding classes at the NAC UK Championships, while another client, Matteo Verde, claimed first place in the Junior First Timers category at the WNBF First Timers & Novice Championships.
What makes Matteo’s success particularly impressive is that Northover was coaching him remotely from Latvia while preparing for his own World Championship appearance.
“The reality is that coaching never stops,” Northover said.
“My clients trust me with their goals and that’s a responsibility I take very seriously.
“Whilst I was in Latvia preparing for and competing at the World Championships, I was still checking in with clients, reviewing progress, making adjustments and providing support where needed.”
For Verde’s competition day alone, he exchanged more than 50 messages, alongside phone and video calls, guiding him through everything from nutrition and hydration to final preparations before stepping on stage.
When the results were announced, Northover was watching via livestream from a restaurant in Riga.
“It sounds dramatic, but I genuinely had to hold back tears when Matteo took first place,” he admitted.
“The reason wasn’t the result itself. It was knowing how much that moment meant to him.
“I’d seen the hard work, the sacrifices, the self-doubt and the relentless consistency that had gone into those 22 weeks. To watch it all come together on stage and see him rewarded for his efforts was incredibly special.
“Moments like that are why I coach.”
That philosophy sits at the heart of Evolve’s success.
While some clients go on to compete in bodybuilding competitions, most are ordinary people looking to improve their health, confidence and quality of life.
Northover believes the physical transformation is often only one part of a much bigger story.
“We’ve had clients regain confidence after years of avoiding social situations, improve relationships because they feel happier and healthier, progress their careers because they carry themselves differently, and even discover entirely new passions through fitness,” he said.
One client, Mark, has lost more than 100 pounds since joining the programme. Others have credited the coaching process with helping them through some of the most difficult periods of their lives.
“One client told me that, for the first time in years, he wakes up every day feeling happy, motivated and purposeful,” Northover said.
“He believes he’s become a better husband, father and role model because of the standards he’s developed throughout the process.
“Stories like these are why I coach. The physical transformation is often just the starting point.”
That emphasis on personal growth was evident when Evolve recently staged its first major client transformation photoshoot.
Featuring six clients who had undergone significant physical and mental changes, the event was designed to celebrate achievements rather than simply create marketing content.
“The photoshoot wasn’t purely about photographs,” Northover explained.
“It was about celebrating the hard work, discipline and commitment that each individual had shown throughout their journey.
“For many, it’s the first time they’ve genuinely been proud of how they look. That’s incredibly rewarding to witness as a coach.”
Despite helping others achieve their goals, Northover continues to set ambitious targets for himself.
His fifth-place finish at the World Championships came after months of preparation, including a six-month growth phase followed by a demanding 20-week contest preparation programme.
Initially, the result left him with mixed emotions.
“If I’m honest, there was a sense of disappointment because as a competitor, I always prepare as if I’m going to win,” he said.
However, reflection soon brought perspective.
“After taking time to reflect, I realised just how significant the achievement was.
“To place fifth in the world in my first World Championships showed me that I belong at that level.
“More importantly, it has given me belief that there’s much more to come.”
Balancing elite-level competition with running a growing business and raising a young family requires exceptional discipline, something Northover sees as central to both bodybuilding and life.
A husband and father to five-year-old Olivia, he believes success comes from maintaining standards even when circumstances are far from ideal.
“I’m a husband, a father and a business owner,” he said.
“I train five days a week and I’m often still working at my desk after 9pm.
“Life throws obstacles at all of us, but I’ve learned that success comes from maintaining standards even when circumstances aren’t ideal.”
His daughter remains one of his biggest motivations.
“I want her to see that hard work, discipline and consistency can help you achieve things that once seemed out of reach.”
As Evolve continues to grow and industry recognition follows, Northover remains focused on the same mission that inspired him to start coaching eight years ago.
“The future of Evolve excites me enormously,” he said.
“The last eight years have been an amazing journey, but I genuinely feel we’re only just getting started.”
For a man who has stood among the world’s best bodybuilders, won national titles and built an award-nominated business, that statement might sound ambitious.
But for the Bourne fitness specialist, success has never really been about trophies or titles.
It is about helping ordinary people achieve extraordinary things – and proving that, with the right support, discipline and belief, almost anything is possible.
