A member of Heavy Metal Gym in Ilkley is celebrating after being crowned British National Champion in his age and weight category at the British Masters Powerlifting Championships in Edinburgh.

John Richardson (Gez) secured the M3 Under 105kg British National Champion title at the Championships, held on 5–6 June, which are organised by British Powerlifting, the UK’s national governing body for the sport.

The British Masters Powerlifting Championships provide a competitive platform for athletes aged 40 and over, with competitors tested across the three core disciplines of powerlifting: squat, bench press and deadlift. Lifters compete within age and weight categories to ensure fair competition.

Competing in the 60-plus age category, John delivered an outstanding performance, recording:

  • Squat: 202.5kg, setting a new Yorkshire and North East record

  • Bench Press: 130kg, setting a new Yorkshire and North East record

  • Deadlift: 225kg

John said he was thrilled to have achieved the national title after months of dedicated preparation: “I’m incredibly proud to be named British National Champion. It’s the result of a huge amount of hard work and commitment, but I’ve enjoyed every step of the journey. The support and camaraderie at Heavy Metal Gym have been fantastic and there was a great atmosphere among the competitors in Edinburgh. If there’s one thing this proves, it’s that age should never be a barrier to challenging yourself and achieving something special.”

Heavy Metal Gym, part of the Billingtons Strength and Fitness brand, is owned by Pete Billington who travelled to Edinburgh to support John and praised his achievement: “I’m absolutely delighted for Gez. To become a British champion is a tremendous achievement and everyone at the gym is incredibly proud of him. He’s represented Ilkley brilliantly and this could be just the beginning, with the possibility of international selection and the chance to represent Team GB!

“We’ve seen some fantastic competition success recently from members of all ages and abilities. One of the things we’re most proud of is helping people progress from complete beginners to confident competitors. Whether someone’s goal is to step onto a platform or simply become stronger, fitter and healthier, we’re here to support them every step of the way.”
