
SPEARHEADED by Shane Brodie and Jamie Hogan, Limerick Powerlifting Club (LPC) and Southside Barbell successfully hosted the European Championships at Castletroy Park Hotel.
The event attracted over 300 athletes representing 14 countries.
The championship not only showcased elite-level strength sports but also provided a significant boost to the local economy, with athletes, coaches, officials and supporters contributing to tourism and business throughout the city during the week-long event.
LPC Southside Barbell, based on the Old Cork Road in Southill, continues a rich tradition in Irish powerlifting. The club proudly traces its roots back to Tommy Dillon’s Southill Powerlifting Club, widely recognised as the original home of Irish powerlifting.
The local club fielded an impressive team of 21 athletes throughout the championships.
The club secured an outstanding medal haul of 22 gold medals and 2 silver medals across the competition.
Among the standout performers were 13-year-old Caroline Phelan and 14-year-old Zack Brodie, the youngest members of the LPC team.
Both athletes captured gold medals in their respective age and weight categories while also breaking Irish records, highlighting their immense talent and promising futures in the sport.
Adding to the club’s remarkable achievements, five LPC athletes set new European and World records during the championships, while two lifters claimed Overall Champion titles in their divisions.
Limerick Powerlifting Club Southside Barbell, based on the Old Cork Road in Southill, continues to welcome new members and encourages people of all backgrounds and experience levels to get involved.
