Man carries wheelchair up Pen y Fan for disability charity

Clint Trayhern, 54, from Pontypool, raised more than £1,500 for Scope by climbing Pen y Fan on May 31, while carrying the wheelchair and other disability aids on his back.

Mr Trayhern said: “I did the walk in memory of Malcolm, Jane and Gareth Alderman who all had a rare, inherited neuromuscular disorder that causes progressive damage to the nervous system and the heart, this disease made them all wheelchair bound from their teens and sadly they lost their lives at a young age.

“It was also to support my wife Jo who is sadly but bravely on her sight loss journey from another genetic condition called Pseudoxanthoma elasticum.

“Also, for everyone who wants to, but can’t. Never take anything for granted cos things can change in a heartbeat.’”

Mr Trayhern is a natural bodybuilder and support worker for Torfean County Borough Council.

He has trained in his sport since he was a teenager.

Last year, he competed in the UK Ultimate Physiques (UKUP) event in Milton Keynes and the OCB Ultimate Natural Britain competition in London.

At the OCB event, Mr Trayhern won the 50+ category, finished second in the open heavyweight division, and third in the over-50s Great Britain category.

Chantelle Ojo, head of supporter-led fundraising at Scope, said: “We are extremely proud that Clint chose to fundraise in support of Scope.

“As a charity, we’re all about changing society for the better, so that disabled people and their families have the same opportunities as everyone else.

“In the UK, one in four people are disabled, and life costs more for disabled people.

“Scope is here to create an equal future with disabled people.”

Mr Trayhern’s Pen y Fan climb was inspired by a late friend who was a wheelchair user, and by his wife Jo, who has sight loss.
