Gambian-born Bakary Sarr qualifies for Natural Bodybuilding World Championship

Sarr finished as runner-up in two categories during international competitions in the Netherlands.

He holds Dutch citizenship, described the qualification as one of the proudest moments of his life, marking a major milestone in a journey shaped by hardship, sacrifice, discipline and determination.

The championship in Budapest is expected to attract natural bodybuilders from across the world under the International Natural Bodybuilding Association (INBA) and Professional Natural Bodybuilding Association (PNBA).

Born and raised in The Gambia, Sarr said his early life experiences taught him resilience and perseverance.

Growing up in difficult environments, he learned to rely on discipline, patience and hard work to overcome challenges.

His move to the Netherlands opened what he called “a new chapter” in his life, where he balanced the realities of adapting to a new country while pursuing his dream of becoming a professional athlete.

“Bodybuilding became more than fitness for me — it became my purpose,” Sarr said.

“The gym gave me structure, focus and a vision for the future.”

Through years of consistent training and self-discipline, he transformed both physically and mentally, eventually earning recognition on the competitive natural bodybuilding stage in the Netherlands.

The INBA/PNBA World Championship in Budapest is regarded as one of the major events in international natural bodybuilding, bringing together athletes who compete under strict anti-doping regulations. Organizers have confirmed that competitors undergo testing procedures to ensure clean sport competition standards.

Sarr said representing both The Gambia and the Netherlands on the international stage carries deep personal significance.

“What makes this journey meaningful is the opportunity to proudly raise both the Gambian and Dutch flags,” he said.

“I want young Africans and immigrants with big dreams to understand that their background does not define their limits.”

Beyond competition, Sarr hopes to contribute to the growth of bodybuilding in The Gambia by sharing knowledge and inspiring young people to pursue their ambitions regardless of their circumstances.

The 2026 INBA/PNBA World Championship will take place at the UP Rendezvénytér arena in Budapest.

Sarr is expected to feature in amateur and professional athletes from multiple countries.
