A young woman from Corozal is being celebrated for turning adversity into achievement, proving that resilience and determination can overcome even the toughest challenges. Twenty-eight-year-old Veronica Sofia has been crowned champion of the 2026 National Powerlifting Competition, marking a major milestone in a journey shaped by serious health battles and unwavering perseverance. Sofia, who has been competing for the past three years, began her powerlifting journey in 2022 following a prolonged period of illness. At just fifteen years old, she was diagnosed with pneumonia, which left lasting scarring on her lungs. Years later, her health challenges intensified, as she battled tuberculosis, hepatitis, and a severe fungal lung infection in 2021. She underwent treatment in Mérida, Mexico for over a year before eventually turning to the gym as part of her recovery process. Competing in the forty-nine point eight-kilogram weight class, Sofia delivered an impressive performance on the national stage. She recorded a seventy-kilogram squat, a thirty-seven-point five kilogram bench press, and a one hundred seventeen point five-kilogram deadlift, numbers that secured her the national title. Despite competing with only one fully functional lung, Sofia says her condition has not limited her ambition. Instead, it has fueled her determination to succeed.
Sofia told Love News that she plans to return to competition next year, with her sights set on continuing to improve her performance. She also hopes her story will inspire more women, particularly those from Corozal, to step forward, embrace strength sports, and pursue their goals regardless of the obstacles they may face.
