Biharsharif: Jhandu Kumar, a para powerlifter from Harnaut in Nalanda district, won a bronze medal at the Asia-Oceania Open Championships 2026 held in Bangkok. Competing in the 72-kg weight category, he lifted a total of 191kg to secure the third position in the event.The championship is being held from April 1 to 14 with a 29-member Indian contingent participating. Kumar was also selected as the flag bearer of the Indian team, leading the contingent with the tricolour.His achievement has brought pride to India and added to the sporting recognition of Bihar. As news of his success reached his native area Harnaut in Nalanda, locals and sports enthusiasts expressed happiness.Nalanda Para Sports Association president Dr Arvind Kumar Singh and secretary Kundan Kumar Pandey congratulated him and said the medal was the result of his hard work and determination. Officials of the Bihar Para Sports Association and other sports enthusiasts also extended their greetings and wished him success in future competitions.
