Schwarzenegger’s Son Joseph Baena Unrecognizable After First Bodybuilding Win

Joseph Baena is carving out his own path in the world of bodybuilding, following closely in the imposing footsteps of his famous father, Arnold Schwarzenegger. At 28 years old, the son of the former Mr. Olympia and his ex-housekeeper Mildred Baena has officially clinched his first bodybuilding competition win on March 28th.

A Triumphant Debut

Baena emerged victorious at the NPC Natural Colorado State competition, a significant milestone in his burgeoning athletic career. He secured top honours in not one, but three categories: the Men’s Open Bodybuilding Heavy Weight Class, the Men’s Classic Physique True Novice, and the Men’s Classic Physique Novice challenges.

The Pepperdine University graduate took to Instagram to share a series of beaming snapshots from the event. In the images, Baena proudly displayed his impressively developed muscles and a deeply tanned yet toned physique, all while sporting black competition underwear on stage. The carousel of photos also included a glimpse of his pre-competition preparations, with him posting selfies just hours before the event. “Tanned up and checked in! Ready for tomorrow’s show,” he captioned the images, which also featured a video of him receiving his event sweatshirt and completing his registration.

The Journey to the Stage: Diet and Dedication

Baena’s commitment to his bodybuilding goals was evident in his dietary choices. On March 25th, he offered a sneak peek into his competition prep diet via TikTok. The engaging video showcased Baena expertly preparing a healthy-looking skillet meal of grilled chicken and a rice dish packed with vegetables.

“As we approach our goal, this, and the ground beef plate are really the only things I’ve been eating the last couple of weeks,” he explained in the video. “On this first prep, I’ve come to realize that the consistency is really the key to getting lean and not losing muscle only a couple days away and I’m feeling great! The meal only took about 15-20 min to prepare.” His culinary skills were on full display as he emulated the precision of a Master Chef in his kitchen.

Overcoming Past Challenges: A Story of Transformation

The fitness enthusiast has been open about his past struggles with body image and his experiences with being overweight during his formative years. This personal journey has undoubtedly fuelled his current dedication.

“People sometimes forget that I used to be chubby in high school,” Baena candidly shared in a video posted in July 2025. “I got cut from my basketball and soccer team because I couldn’t keep up with the other kids.” He went on to explain how swimming became a turning point in his life. “Swim didn’t have tryouts, thankfully, and completely changed my life forever. That was my introduction to fitness and training. Everyone starts somewhere but starting is the most important.”

The Schwarzenegger Influence: Pushing Beyond Limits

The bond between Joseph Baena and his father, Arnold Schwarzenegger, extends beyond genetics; it’s also built on shared passion for fitness. Baena and the former California governor have frequently trained together. In a 2022 interview with Men’s Fitness, Baena reflected on the invaluable lessons learned from his father. “One of the big things I learned from Dad was not to have the ten-rep mentality,” he revealed. “It’s pushing yourself to the limits and going that extra mile, getting those extra reps and half reps till you’re basically dying.” This philosophy of relentless effort and pushing past perceived limitations is clearly a driving force behind Baena’s impressive bodybuilding debut. His victory is a testament to his hard work, discipline, and the enduring legacy of dedication passed down from his legendary father.
