On Saturday, the Roswell High powerlifting team hosted three other teams for a powerlifting meet.
The powerlifting meet had teams from Goddard, Roswell, Mescalero and New Mexico Military Institute (NMMI) all in attendance. The meet is split into a girls’ and boys’ competition, with lifters then being separated by weight.
The lifter is tasked with doing three reps of squat, bench and deadlift. A lifter can increase the weight of each rep if done successfully. The determination of a successful lift is approved by three judges. The judges focus on a specific area of the lift, and they determine if their area of the lift is successful with factors such as the lifter’s posture and how steady the lift is. If two of the judges deem the lift as a fail, or if the lifter can’t complete the lift, the lifter can’t move their weight up.
At the end, the three highest weights of bench, squat and dead lift that a lifter can complete are added together, and the winner of a weight class is determined by who has the best combined weight in their weight class. There can also be team points, but in this meet, their wasn’t. The three local schools in attendance were Goddard, Roswell and NMMI.
Roswell had 18 lifters in attendance, with 16 boys and two girls. Six of the lifters took home first place in their respective weight classes, and some of those lifters were Lilianna Martinez in the 123 pound weight class, Noah Martinez in the 114, Alberto Hernandez in the 220 and Arthur Garcia in the super heavyweight class (SHW).
Goddard had 22 lifters in attendance, with seven girls and 15 boys. Eight of their lifters placed in first, with some of them being Tatum Boone in the 220 weight class, Nathan Cobos in the 132, Coltin Brewton in the 181 and Julian Eaker in the 242.
NMMI had five lifters in attendance, three boys and two girls. Three of them finished first in their weight class: James Roh in the 165 weight class, Amarina Rai in the 105 and Sophia Birdsong in the 132.
