Lots of talented athletes were in the field last week, earning accolades for jobs well done.
Every week, the Herald welcomes nominations of varsity athletes for those students to be recognized as Athlete of the Week. Once nominated, the community votes and chooses the winner.
This week’s winners are
Lacy Bloskas and Micah Cortez.
Abernathy senior Lacy Bloskas brought home a pair of first-place finishes in the Discus (119-11.00) and the Shot Put (35-7) at the Littlefield Wildcat Relays.
Abernathy powerlifter Micah Cortez won the 114-pound weight class with a total score of 925 pounds. Cortez finished with a 350-pound squat, 205-pound bench press and a 370-pound dead lift at the Region 1 Division 4 Meet in Post.

Voting will start March 31 and will continue through April 2.
Here’s how the contest works each week.
The Herald accepts varsity nominees through the weekend based on activities that took place the previous week. These are athletes who competed in team sports or individual sports (maybe both?). Each week, you, the readers, can cast votes for three male and female nominees from across the region within the Herald’s coverage area.
Nominees must be submitted by Sunday evenings. They can be texted in, called in or emailed. They can also be submitted through the Herald Hotline or the Herald Sports Hotline or you can send them via email to ellysa.harris@hearstnp.com.
The nominees are shared and voting begins at 12:01 a.m. on Tuesdays. The public can vote through noon on Thursdays when the athletes with the highest number of votes are declared the week’s winners.
Winning athletes are announced online at myplainview.com each Friday and published in the Saturday print edition of the Plainview Herald.
