Joseph Baena, the 28-year-old son of seven-time Mr. Olympia champion Arnold Schwarzenegger, swept three gold medals and a silver at his competitive bodybuilding debut on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at the National Physique Committee (NPC) Natural Colorado State Championships in Denver.

Baena claimed first place in the Men’s Open Bodybuilding Heavy Weight Class, the Men’s Classic Physique Novice, and the Men’s Classic Physique True Novice divisions, while finishing second in the Men’s Classic Physique Open Class C.

“Mission Accomplished!” Baena wrote on Instagram alongside several photos of himself posing on stage, celebrating what he described as a successful first outing in the sport.

Many observers at the event noted how closely Baena resembles his father, particularly when he hit some of Schwarzenegger’s classic poses on stage. His balanced physique impressed competitors and fans alike, with the broader bodybuilding community watching closely to see how far he might go in the sport.

The debut came with the sport’s most famous coach in his corner. Schwarzenegger, 78, personally trained his son at Gold’s Gym Venice Beach in the weeks leading up to the competition, fine-tuning his posing and presentation in sessions that went viral on social media. Baena shared one piece of his father’s advice in his caption ahead of the event: “You have to shock the muscles!”

The NPC Natural Colorado State Championships is a drug-tested competition requiring both drug testing and a polygraph examination, meaning Baena competed clean. He has previously spoken openly about never feeling the need to use steroids to build his physique.

Baena’s path to the stage was not without personal struggle. He previously told People magazine that classmates, including close friends, bullied him for being overweight as a teenager, an experience that became the driving force behind his decision to transform his body and pursue fitness seriously.

Baena has said he does not want to live in his father’s shadow and has deliberately kept his mother Mildred’s surname rather than adopting the Schwarzenegger name. He also maintains a parallel career in acting alongside his bodybuilding ambitions.

Strong performances across multiple divisions at his debut could open the door to International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness (IFBB) Pro Qualifier competitions at a later stage.
