Who is Joseph Baena, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s illegitimate son, whom he is training to follow in his footsteps in bodybuilding?

The storied legacy of the Schwarzenegger name is returning to the bodybuilding spotlight, though it carries a different surname this time. Joseph Baena, the 28-year-old son of former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, is finalized and ready for his competitive debut at the NPC Natural Colorado State championships.

The event, held at the Pinnacle Performing Arts Center on Saturday, marks the end of years of speculation regarding whether Baena would officially follow in his father’s legendary footsteps.

Training alongside the “Austrian Oak” at the iconic Gold’s Gym in Venice, Baena has undergone a rigorous eight-week transformation, reportedly adding 18 pounds of muscle to his frame in preparation for the novice division.

The preparation has been a hands-on family affair. On Tuesday, Baena shared footage of a high-intensity training session where his 78-year-old father could be seen coaching him through repetitions, offering the same vintage advice that defined the Golden Era of the sport.

Schwarzenegger, who ruled the bodybuilding world in the 1970s, was heard instructing his son to “shock the muscles,” a signature training philosophy centered on varying routines to prevent physical plateaus.

For Baena, a Pepperdine University graduate and real estate agent, the journey represents more than just a fitness goal; it is a public embrace of a heritage that was kept secret for the first 13 years of his life.

Rigorous standards and the natural path to the podium

The choice of the NPC Natural Colorado State for his debut is a strategic one, emphasizing a drug-free approach to the sport. Unlike “open” divisions where testing varies, this specific competition enforces some of the strictest protocols in the industry.

Every athlete, including Baena, must undergo not only a standardized drug test but also a mandatory 30-minute polygraph examination to verify their “100 percent natural” status.

Baena has been vocal about his commitment to a clean lifestyle, previously telling the Trensparent podcast that he never felt the need for performance-enhancing substances, preferring to rely on the elite genetics and “old school” training methods passed down from his father.

Baena’s routine in the final days leading up to the show has been focused on extreme precision. To achieve the necessary stage leanness while maintaining his newly gained mass, he has adhered to a strict diet of ground beef, chicken, rice, and roasted vegetables. He recently shared a glimpse of his peak-week meals set to the music of Luis Miguel, a nod to his Guatemalan heritage through his mother, Mildred Baena.

In the kitchen, just as in the gym, Baena’s aesthetic choices mirror his father’s, often sporting the same style of short-cut posing trunks that Schwarzenegger popularized during his run to seven Mr. Olympia titles.
