“I am alive and well,” Haney said. “It’s appalling to see how fast rumors can spread. Yes, I am in need of a living kidney donor as communicated by my two awesome children.”
Despite the seriousness of the situation, Haney made it clear he is staying strong and focused.
“Many of you have sent prayers my way, and I appreciate them deeply. My approach is to be proactive as I face this current challenge.”
He added another message to ease concern, emphasizing that he remains active.
“Thank you all for being genuinely concerned,” Haney said. “I am still well and fully functional. I’m not needed in heaven at the time🙏🏽❤️🫵🏽.”
Lee Haney Says He Knew for Decades a Kidney Transplant Would Be Needed
Haney’s children shared that he has known for years that a transplant would eventually be necessary.
“26 years ago, I was told I would eventually need a kidney transplant,” Haney said.
“Through faith, proper nutrition, and exercise, I was blessed to delay that for many years. Now, my kidney is failing, and I’m prayerfully hoping to find a living donor.”
He also expressed gratitude for the support surrounding him, noting the importance of family during this time.
Legacy of a Champion Beyond the Stage
Haney is widely considered one of the greatest bodybuilders in the sport’s history. According to a report from Fox, he shares the record for the most Mr. Olympia titles with Ronnie Coleman, with eight wins each, surpassing Arnold Schwarzenegger’s seven.
Though retired from competition, Haney remains active in the fitness community and continues to host the annual Lee Haney Games in the Atlanta area.
He was inducted into the International Sports Hall of Fame in 2014 and later served as chairman of the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports under President Bill Clinton.
As he faces this next chapter, Haney continues to lean on faith, family, and the support around him.
“Thank you for your prayers, love, and support,” he said.
