Amritsar: The police have registered an FIR against four doctors of a private hospital here for alleged negligence in the treatment of 41-year-old bodybuilder Varinder Singh Ghuman, who died on Oct 9, 2025.To probe the death, a special investigation team (SIT) and a seven-member medical board were constituted.Police sources said Ghuman’s death occurred due to alleged negligence during surgery at Fortis Escorts Hospital, following which the Amritsar police registered a case under Section 106(1) of the BNS against four senior doctors of the hospital — an orthopedic surgeon, two anesthetists (including a consultant), and a cardiologist.On Oct 10, 2025, the hospital had stated that the patient developed sudden cardiac arrhythmia and the medical team immediately initiated advanced resuscitation measures, but despite their efforts, he could not be revived.On Saturday, the hospital issued another statement: “We are given to understand that an FIR has been registered in the case. We have been cooperating with the authorities and will continue to do so while pursuing appropriate remedies in accordance with the applicable legal and regulatory framework.”The medical fraternity has expressed resentment over the FIR against doctors. Dr Avtar Singh, a senior orthopedic surgeon, held a meeting here following which he told the mediapersons that registering an FIR against doctors after a patient’s death, despite a medical board report, would demoralise the fraternity.Dr Avtar Singh added that complications could arise even with due care and stressed that doctors’ dignity, professional integrity, and working conditions must be respected while ensuring fair and balanced accountability.MSID:: 129719555 413 |
