Lady Mustang powerlifting sends three to State

The Nixon-Smiley Lady Mustangs competed at the THSWPA Region V 3A Division II Regional Powerlifting meet held on March 5 at the Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg, where several athletes delivered strong performances and three lifters earned spots at the State meet.

Leading the Lady Mustangs was Ruby Mendez, who finished third in the 114-pound weight class with an impressive 705-pound total, consisting of a 250-pound squat, 175-pound bench press, and 280-pound deadlift. Her performance earned her a spot at the State meet.

In the 132-pound weight class, Gabriela Limon finished second with a total of 755 pounds. Limon achieved lifts of 305 pounds in the squat, 155 pounds in the bench press, and 295 pounds in the deadlift to qualify for the State competition.

Senior Wendy Rodriguez also secured her spot at the State meet in the 181-pound division. Rodriguez totaled 850 pounds on the day, lifting 315 pounds in the squat, 230 pounds in the bench press, and 305 pounds in the deadlift to finish seventh overall but still qualify for the State meet based on the qualifying total.

Several other Lady Mustangs delivered strong Regional performances. Mariela Limon finished third in the 123-pound weight class with a 700-pound total, while Kendra Savoie came in ninth in the 132-pound division with a 640-pound total. Piper Keen accumulated 605 pounds to finish 10th in the 148-pound class. In the 165-pound division, Janice White took third with an 805-pound total, and Stephanie Avila was fourth with an 800-pound total.

As a team, Nixon-Smiley finished fifth overall in the Regional standings with 21 team points in a competitive field of 16 programs from across South Texas.

The Lady Mustangs will now turn their focus to the THSWPA State powerlifting meet, where Ruby Mendez, Gabriela Limon, and Wendy Rodriguez will represent Nixon-Smiley against the top lifters from across Texas.
