274 Athletes To Compete At European Powerlifting Championships In Malta


Malta is set to host the European Open Classic Powerlifting Championships, bringing together 274 athletes from 35 countries to compete for the highest continental titles.

The event will be held between 15th and 22nd March at the InterContinental Hotel in St Julian’s.

A team of nine Maltese athletes, led by Lead Coach Joseph Abela, will compete across seven weight categories against Europe’s top competitors.

The Maltese participants and their schedules are as follows:

  • Maria Farrugia and Merlina Marinova – Women’s U47kg on 15th March
  • Shawn Farrugia – Men’s U74kg on 16th March
  • Neil Bezzina – Men’s U83kg on 17th March
  • Jurgen Dalli and Ian Pace – Men’s U93kg on 19th March
  • Laura Chetcuti Dimech – Women’s U69kg on 19th March
  • Maria Pezkine – Women’s U76kg on 20th March
  • Alessandro Gatt – Men’s U105kg on 20th March

Powerlifting consists of three disciplines: squat, bench press, and deadlift, with winners determined by the highest total lifted in their respective weight class.

The championship offers Maltese athletes the opportunity to compete at Europe’s highest level of powerlifting, showcasing their strength and technique on an international stage.
