Victim of bodybuilder rapist slams “monster” who strangled her during attack

“Although I am happy with the result, no length of sentence will ever be enough for what that monster put me through.”

A victim of a vile bodybuilder who raped and sexually assaulted three women has said she can “finally move on” after the “monster” was locked up. Mark McMillan was sentenced to 11 years at the High Court in Kilmarnock today after being found guilty of five charges against three women between January 2022 and July 2023.

The court heard how the 47-year-old strangled two of his victims, choking one so much she lost consciousness, and even sexually abused victims while they slept. The sick fitness fanatic, who is said to lash out when he did not have access to cocaine, left the women – who can’t be named for legal reasons – physically and mentally traumatised after attacking them at properties in Stevenston and Kilwinning.

One survivor of McMillan’s abuse, Lynne-Marie Hand, waved her right to anonymity to raise awareness of the horrors the brute put her through. The 39-year-old previously told the Record how McMillan strangled her while raping her and has now spoken on how “relieved” she is knowing her attacker will be behind bars.

She said: “I am just so relieved. Although I am married now, it was as if I couldn’t settle into married life due to what this beast did hanging over me.

“I can now close this chapter of my life, shut the book and throw it to the back of the shelf. I now have the chance to move on with my life. That’s all I’ve ever wanted.

“I have been carrying this weight on my shoulders for the past three years. I couldn’t sleep last night before the sentencing. I felt so nervous and sick leading up to it.

“I had to fight back the tears because I didn’t want to give him the satisfaction of one tear rolling down my cheek.

“But, hearing that he got 11 years made me leave feeling like a different person. I am full of light. His dark cloud is no longer over me. The first thing my husband said to me when we left was that I looked totally different from when I walked in.

Although I am happy with the result, no length of sentence will ever be enough for what that monster put me through.”

The dad-of-three appeared at court, via video link, for sentencing today after a jury found him guilty of five charges against the trio at the same court in December. Lord Harrower said: “You treated your partners as mere objects for your own sexual gratification. You penetrated them in every conceivable orifice with your penis or your fingers, sometimes even when they were asleep.”

Alongside the 11 year sentence, McMillan will be monitored for three years in the community and was also placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register indefinitely. He was also made the subject of indefinite Non-Harassment Orders, banning him from approaching or contacting his victims for the rest of his life.

Ms Hand has vowed to continue to raise awareness for what McMillan put her through. She said: “Speaking out has really helped me find peace.

“No sentence is long enough for that monster. He hates women. Once he gets out, I have no doubt in my mind that he will try and hurt someone else. Nothing will change him.

“I will never stop speaking out. I will continue to raise awareness of what he put me through and campaign on behalf of other victims and safety of other women.”
