Mustangs Powerlifting Earns Runner-Up Finish at Victoria St. Joseph Power Fest


The Nixon-Smiley Mustangs powerlifting program turned in another strong performance this weekend at the Victoria St. Joseph Power Fest Meet, earning 2nd-place team finishes for both the boys and girls. Competing against a deep and talented group of lifters, the Mustangs showcased toughness, consistency, and a winning mindset across multiple weight classes.

Head Coach Paul Kirby was proud of the way both squads responded throughout the meet.

“I’m extremely proud of the way our kids competed today. They trusted their preparation, stayed locked in from start to finish, and battled for every point. Getting second on both sides shows our depth and the work these athletes are putting in every day.”

On the boys’ side, Nixon-Smiley finished 2nd overall with 37 team points, beating Victoria West, Victoria St. Joseph, Louise, El Campo, Palacios, and Refugio with multiple lifters earning top placements and helping stack crucial team points.

THSPA Live Standings

  • Khali Jantes won the 132 lb class with an 1125 total.
  • Eric Rodriguez took 1st in the 165 lb class, posting a huge 1420 total.
  • Gavino Moreno delivered one of the top performances of the meet, earning 1st in the 242 lb class with an impressive 1615 total.
  • Additional scoring performances came from Jayven Robles (3rd, 114), Kyzick Jantes (5th, 114), Jedidiah Alvarez (3rd, 165), Jaydin Munoz (3rd, 198), Cruz Pompa (4th, 198), Adan Zavala (5th, 220), and Jaylun Rodriguez (3rd, 242).

The Lady Mustangs matched that success with a 2nd-place team finish, totaling 37 points, with big performances in both the lighter and heavier divisions.

THSWPA Live Standings

  • Grace Gomez earned 1st place in the 105 lb class with a 625 total.
  • Ruby Mendez captured 1st in the 114 lb class with a 640 total.
  • Gabriela Limon placed 2nd in the 132 lb class with a strong 765 total, while Mariela Limon finished 4th with 690.
  • In the 181 lb class, Wendy Rodriguez took 2nd with a 745 total, and Janice White followed close behind in 3rd with 675.
  • Jenna Bustos added valuable points for Nixon-Smiley with a 6th place finish in the 242+ class.

With both teams bringing home runner-up trophies, the Mustangs continue to prove they are one of the top programs in the region. Nixon-Smiley will now build on this momentum as they prepare for the next meet on the schedule.
