The training for athletes in-season vs. off-season varies. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/naturalbodybuilding.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">International Natural Bodybuilding Association (INBA)\/Professional Natural Bodybuilding Association (PNBA)<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Kenyan Natural Olympia champion <strong>Meshack Ochieng<\/strong> discussed how his training changes in-season vs. off-season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meshack Ochieng is a Keynan PNBA natural bodybuilder standing 5\u20192\u201d. Despite his size disadvantage, <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/generationiron.com\/natural-olympia-winners\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he won Natural Olympia 2020<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the 2018 OCB pro bodybuilding Yorton Cup, and the 2018 IPE Worlds. His training regimen didn\u2019t start with luxury training equipment. Instead, Ochieng began lifting weights with stone <a href=\"https:\/\/generationiron.com\/best-dumbbells-home-training\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">dumbbells<\/span><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/generationiron.com\/best-barbells\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">barbells<\/span><\/a> in his backyard.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Off-Season Training Vs. In-Season Training<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meshack Ochieng was on the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Longevity Muscle Podcast<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> discussing various topics and touched on how his training differs in-season vs. out of season. Ochieng says that he trains four days a week during the off-season (each muscle group once a week) and increases the volume during <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/generationiron.com\/repercussions-of-contest-prep\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">contest prep<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Ochieng stated:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen I\u2019m four weeks to competition, that\u2019s when I move it to six days a week. When it comes to competition, when I\u2019m getting ready to compete, I train everything twice a week. But then four weeks out, then it\u2019s three times a week.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ochieng claims that 4-6 weeks is all he needs to prep for a show. However, Ochieng admits that he stayed away from American food upon migrating to America. So he could keep on track with his <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/generationiron.com\/offseason-physique\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">nutrition during the off-season<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, mainly eating healthy foods.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ochieng also suggested avoiding heavy lifting as a show approaches. Ochieng noted:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cDoing heavy workouts when you are approaching a contest is very dangerous. Because the more you get leaner, the more your joints get weak. And so if you put heavy loads on weak joints, you are going to get injured.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ochieng discussed several other topics on the podcast, including not needing a luxury gym to build a world-class physique and his training philosophy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Training Without State-of-the-Art Equipment<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ochieng started weightlifting in Kenya with his older brother. They didn\u2019t have a standard gym and made their backyard gym. Ochieng said:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cWe didn\u2019t have a fully equipped gym, so everything in our small gym we made it by ourselves. We constructed the benches, the weights.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, Ochieng says he trains at a small gym at Anytime Fitness. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, Chieng says it\u2019s essential to find movements that work the best with your <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/generationiron.com\/jim-stoppani-genetics-peds-bodybuilding\/\">genetics<\/a><\/span>; not everyone will respond to each exercise the same.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Training Philosophy<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ochieng says if you\u2019re a competitor, it\u2019s essential to know when to change things. For example, Ochieng says that <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/generationiron.com\/5-best-supersets-strong-chest\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supersets<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are effective before shows. However, he doesn\u2019t recommend them to build muscle. Instead, he suggests picking one or two big <a href=\"https:\/\/generationiron.com\/effective-compound-exercises\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">compound movements<\/span><\/a> per body part. Ochieng personally picks two workouts with heavy weight (in the 5-8 rep range), then the rest of his training is with light weight performing ten reps.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ochieng also trains biceps with the chest because he\u2019s found his <a href=\"https:\/\/generationiron.com\/skull-crusher-triceps\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">triceps<\/span><\/a> are toast after training his chest muscles.
