On Jan. 6, 2026, via YouTube, <strong>he broke down his latest longevity-inspired leg workout using pyramid sets.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fitnessvolt.com\/15599\/jay-cutler\/\">Jay Cutler<\/a> reached the top of the sport in the 2000s when <a href=\"https:\/\/fitnessvolt.com\/ronnie-coleman-profile\/\">Ronnie Coleman<\/a> was at the height of his powers. In 2006, Cutler dethroned \u2018The King,\u2019 kickstarting what many thought would be a long dynasty. However, he lost the title in 2008. This paved the way for an epic comeback a year later when he bested Branch Warren and <a href=\"https:\/\/fitnessvolt.com\/dexter-jackson-profile\/\">Dexter Jackson<\/a> to win back the Sandow trophy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In retirement, Cutler still maintains a vigorous workout schedule. He\u2019s free of major injuries and has pointed out that <a href=\"https:\/\/fitnessvolt.com\/jay-cutler-explains-why-the-gym-is-my-savior-talks-training-frequency-and-optimal-routines-with-mike-ohearn\/\">training seven days a week<\/a> works best for him. Last set, doing a little more contraction than I like to, wasn\u2019t super heavy, but I got a little strain in there. I worked it out,\u201d he said. \u201cNo pain whatsoever, or reinjury.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4 id=\"seated-hamstring-curl\">Seated hamstring curl\u00a0<\/h4>\n<p>Cutler warmed up his hamstrings first with a couple of pyramid sets. <a href=\"https:\/\/fitnessvolt.com\/pyramid-training-program\/\"><strong>Pyramid sets<\/strong><\/a> are a method where you change the weight across consecutive sets, typically moving up or down in a pyramid-like pattern.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cPyramided up a couple of plates. I think I did four or five or six sets there, a couple warm-up sets.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4 id=\"leg-curl\">Leg curl\u00a0<\/h4>\n<p>He prefers hitting the hamstrings first because he believes they are weaker compared to his quads.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cMoved over to the one-legged curl. This is a little different. A lot of these are not selectorized equipment, so they don\u2019t have a pulley or a chain or anything like that. I added some plates on there, one leg at a time, really isolated the bicep for the leg, which is basically the hamstring.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4 id=\"stiff-legged-deadlifts\">Stiff-legged deadlifts\u00a0<\/h4>\n<p>Cutler keeps a slight bend in his knees during stiff-legged deadlifts, so he called it a cross between a Romanian deadlift.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pullquote align-center\">\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s actually more of almost like a I don\u2019t even know what to call it, a stretch of the hamstrings and glutes because I don\u2019t do stiff legs.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s basically a Romanian, whatever, a cross in between, where I\u2019m stretching everything, bend the knees a little bit. Just feels better for me. I can really bring the hamstrings in.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4 id=\"lying-hamstring-curl\">Lying hamstring curl\u00a0<\/h4>\n<p>For added stimulus, he used the lying hamstring curl machine.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pullquote align-center\">\n<p>\u201cThis is a little different from a nice angle on this machine. Did three sets there pretty much worked with the same weight,\u201d he adds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4 id=\"lunges\">Lunges\u00a0<\/h4>\n<p>During lunges, Cutler aimed for 10 reps per leg with 75 pounds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pullquote align-center\">\n<p>\u201cI used to do it on the turf area. We went into what used to be the leg room, which is now the powerlifting room. I did walking lunges there with a barbell, 75 pounds on my back. Normally, I do at least 10 reps per leg.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4 id=\"leg-extensions\">Leg extensions\u00a0<\/h4>\n<p>He took his time on leg extensions and hit five or six sets to push blood into his quads.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cFirst exercise for quads. Probably did five or six sets there, pyramided the weight up to get blood into the quads from the hamstrings.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4 id=\"leg-press\">Leg press\u00a0<\/h4>\n<p>For more quad engagement, Cutler moved to the leg press machine.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pullquote align-center\">\n<p>\u201cReally just trying to get the quads engaged,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QZZxL2sf_II&amp;t=1262s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said<\/a> Cutler.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4 id=\"inverted-leg-press\">Inverted leg press\u00a0<\/h4>\n<p>Next, the bodybuilding legend locked in on the inverted leg press, which he admits was crucial to his iconic \u201909 comeback.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pullquote align-center\">\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s one of my favorites,\u201d shared Cutler. \u201cI work this a lot of in \u201909 when I was trying to get my discrepancy in my legs because that inverted with the blood coming down flushing back and forth, it really worked well for me.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4 id=\"squat-machine\">Squat machine\u00a0<\/h4>\n<p>Focusing on quad contractions, he moved over to the squat machine.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cDid three sets there, not heavy, heavy weights. Just two plates a side. Just getting everything contracted.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4 id=\"adductor-machine\">Adductor machine\u00a0<\/h4>\n<p>Lastly, he pushed through reps on the adductor machine.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cI incorporated that into my workout. Did three sets there and wrapped it up. Nothing crazy. This is my first leg workout of 2026.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Cutler has also discussed the <a href=\"https:\/\/fitnessvolt.com\/jay-cutler-how-many-sets-per-body-part-max-gains\/\">optimal number of sets per body part<\/a> to achieve the best results. While he used to aim for 20 sets per body part each week, he\u2019s dialed it down in retirement. Now, Cutler shared that 12 sets per body part is best for his routine and recovery demands.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cutler remains in tremendous shape since leaving the stage.
