US, before moving with his mother to Oakland, California, where he spent his teens. But his physique caused a few problems on set. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"18\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">During his early acting years, studio photographers struggled to frame him alongside other actors. At 6 foot 1 and around 215lbs with a 29-inch waist, Reeves made his co-stars look small in comparison. Some male leads reportedly refused to stand next to him on shoots, and wardrobe departments complained that standard suits hung awkwardly on his broad shoulders. Even directors had to adjust camera angles so that he wouldn\u2019t dominate the frame.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"20\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">He was then asked to lose 20lbs to appear less imposing. Reeves tried, cutting back on food and training volume, but his physique barely changed, and he could only manage a 12lb loss. &#8216;My body just wouldn\u2019t get smaller,&#8217; he later said. &#8216;My frame and muscle shape were what they were.&#8217; In the end, the studios conceded and he continued his acting career. Each session was intense, comprising 30\u201340 sets and lasting around 90 minutes. He adhered to several key principles: Reeves never trained to absolute failure, instead preferring to work within two to four reps shy of failure, usually employing rep ranges of 8 to 12 total reps. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"26\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">To maintain high intensity, he strictly limited rest time: 45\u201360 seconds between sets for smaller muscle groups and 60\u201390 seconds for larger ones. He utilised a double progression system for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/building-muscle\/a44760238\/progressive-overload\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/building-muscle\/a44760238\/progressive-overload\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"progressive overload\" data-node-id=\"26.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\">progressive overload<\/a>, meaning he would first increase the reps and only then the weight. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"28\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Recovery was prioritised, too. Reeves ensured he largely had 48 hours of rest between workouts and was diligent about avoiding overtraining. If he felt particularly run down, he would opt to reduce the number of sets or the weight used rather than skipping a training session altogether. This, and focusing solely on full-body training, ensures that no single muscle group was trained more than the others. His routine incorporated bodybuilding-centric exercises: to keep his waist tight, he practised daily stomach vacuums, and he included plenty of dumbbell pullovers specifically to expand his chest. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"30\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Finally, daily movement was key to his conditioning; Reeves would hike or ride horses daily and trained outdoors as much as possible.
