How Bodybuilding Culture Created the Word

Collins traces the origins of “mogging” to approximately 2016, when it began appearing in bodybuilding circles.

The expression is believed to come from “AMOG,” an abbreviation for “alpha male of the group.”

Originally, the term described the most physically dominant man in a gym or social setting.

It eventually evolved into “mogging,” a verb used to describe someone who makes another person look less impressive.

The word later spread through online communities focused on physical appearance, muscularity and self-improvement.

Its popularity also grew alongside the rise of “looksmaxxing,” an internet trend centered on improving physical appearance.

While the two expressions have different meanings, both reflect the growing influence of online communities obsessed with appearance and physical comparisons.

For bodybuilding fans, the connection is particularly fitting. The sport has always revolved around comparisons of size, symmetry, conditioning and presentation.

Now, a term rooted in those comparisons has entered everyday language.

From the Gym to the Mainstream

Collins selected “mogging” after analyzing language trends and changes in word usage.

The dictionary publisher maintains a database containing billions of words from written and spoken sources, including social media.

The term has become especially popular among Gen Z and Gen Alpha, who frequently use it to describe situations far removed from bodybuilding.

A professional athlete might mog an opponent with a dominant performance. A celebrity might mog another on the red carpet. Even a new video game might be described as mogging an older release.

“Mogging” beat out several other expressions on Collins’ 2026 shortlist, including “ghost job,” “friendslop” and “P(doom).”

The selection follows “vibe coding,” which was named Word of the Year in 2025.

For a sport that has steadily expanded its influence through fitness influencers, social media and popular culture, the recognition is another example of bodybuilding reaching audiences far beyond the gym.

And this time, bodybuilding didn’t just influence fitness trends. It helped shape the language itself.
