At first glance I joked it must be AI, but behind that moment on stage in Hull and beyond the bodybuilding poses and two tons of fake tan is something far more eye catching.<\/p>\n<p>Phil Vickery has rebuilt his body, but he has rebuilt his mind too. Along the way he has found something to help fill a little of the void left behind after retirement from rugby in friendship, community, a sense of belonging and &#8211; perhaps most importantly &#8211; the feeling of being valued.<\/p>\n<p>All of which matter immensely as he faces an uncertain future.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Latest rugby union news, headlines, results and reports<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Latest Sky Sports deals<\/strong><strong> or <\/strong><strong>stream with no contract on NOW<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The hour or so I spend with the 50-year-old former England captain is one of extreme emotions, from laughing about his chosen shade of mahogany and his inability to get the most out of his glutes on camera, to the sadness and frustration when he talks about struggling to remember simple things.<\/p>\n<p>He is searingly honest. There&#8217;s no bravado, no hiding the difficult moments, just a determination to show up and live his best life.<\/p>\n<p>Which right now looks very different to a few years ago. &#8220;I&#8217;m not really a bodybuilder. You know, I&#8217;m the wrong size,&#8221; jokes Vickery.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve got long levers. I&#8217;ve got a massive rib cage. It began six or seven years ago when I was struggling. I was in just a really bad spot. I just looked at myself, and I thought, well, look at the state of you. Do something about it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Vickery&#8217;s life changed when he stepped into the Wolfpack gym in Gloucester and the hard work began.<\/p>\n<p>He goes on: &#8220;I just loved just being in that environment again.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>His coach Chris Bradley guided him through the good and bad days of training. After Vickery&#8217;s initial and dramatic transformation he suggested he should enter a bodybuilding competition.<\/p>\n<p>Vickery&#8217;s first response was emphatic. &#8220;Mate, no way. There&#8217;s no way I am getting on a stage.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Deep down, though, the competitive streak is still there. After Bradley accused him of lacking courage his response was: &#8220;Right, let&#8217;s do this.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As a player Vickery never shied away from a challenge. &#8216;The Raging Bull&#8217; &#8211; as he was affectionately known &#8211; wasn&#8217;t going to start now. The idea of being on stage and performing excited him and then the reality hit.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You are backstage, the nerves are so bad. It reminded me so much of the changing room. Am I going to be sick? Am I good enough?<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Then there&#8217;s the posing, left shoulder down, right arm across. Keep that tight. I&#8217;ve lost my glutes, my hamstring&#8217;s not engaged&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>At this point I had to do a reality check. This was, after all, a man who spent years being battered at the highest level of Test rugby and he was now worrying about the appearance of his backside. It was an unlikely new challenge.<\/p>\n<p>He adds: &#8220;The thing is, you want to show off all that work and my glutes are the worst, and they were so much better than it showed on pictures.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Maybe the glutes will come but what Vickery has gained is far more precious. &#8220;You cannot replace that feeling of being in that changing room and wearing that jersey.&#8221; But maybe the gym is that place where he can be&#8230; &#8220;appreciated?&#8221; I ask. &#8220;Yeah, and just valued.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It is also a way of taking some control, I suggest. Vickery has spoken about his cognitive difficulties and his diagnosis of probable chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a brain condition associated with repeated head impacts.<\/p>\n<p>For him, the effects can be felt in everyday moments that other people might take for granted. He admits he used to become angry when he could not remember something simple. Now he is trying to respond differently.<\/p>\n<p>He makes himself laugh as a way of coping, rather than allowing the frustration to take over. It does not mean the worry has disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Of course, it worries me,&#8221; he admits. His response has been to concentrate on what he can do. He believes in the body&#8217;s ability to heal and is exploring ways to support his health. He was off for baseline brain testing that afternoon and is using oxygen treatment.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I take comfort from knowing that I&#8217;m doing everything I can to be the best I can and to go as long as possible, and to try and be that positive aspect of it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a similar determination in Vickery&#8217;s commitment to the legal action involving former players and rugby&#8217;s governing bodies which has a new legal team behind it.<\/p>\n<p>Former players have claimed long-term consequences of repeated concussive impacts has lead to conditions like early onset dementia and CTE and that the governing bodies failed in their duty of care to protect players from the risks of brain injury.<\/p>\n<p>The governing bodies, which include World Rugby and the RFU, have consistently denied any breach of duty of care and have argued that the risks were part of the sport.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Things are moving along,&#8221; he says. &#8220;It is not at the forefront of my life. I&#8217;m there to support everybody who&#8217;s on it. I am 100 per cent committed to it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Vickery makes it clear he still loves the game and there is no real bitterness.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We did what we did. If we knew then what we know now, we wouldn&#8217;t have done it because we know the risks. But that was just what happened, and that&#8217;s what you did,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People ask me, would you do it all again? Yeah, 100 per cent I would. My only gripe is: look after me when I get too poorly. I don&#8217;t think that&#8217;s unreasonable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For him it&#8217;s not simply about winning or losing. &#8220;People talk about money. It doesn&#8217;t change my diagnosis. What it does do if we were to win, it allows you then to be able to plan for people to be able to look after me,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It gives comfort in that sense. I want it to go to trial and for people&#8217;s voices to be heard. There are some just dreadful stories of people suffering, which need to be aired.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Staying silent and not saying anything is not a defence against brain injury because I&#8217;m telling you, there&#8217;s a lot of suffering out there and we need to take some responsibility.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For all the physical changes it is Vickery&#8217;s warmth and humanity that leaves the strongest impression.
