An Oklahoma City woman who suffered a devastating injury during an ice storm has turned her recovery into a passion for competitive powerlifting.<\/p>\n
On Jan. 22, 2024, Karlyn Blumenthal slipped on ice while heading into work.<\/p>\n
\u201cI literally took one step out the door. And I was in the air,\u201d Blumenthal said.<\/p>\n
The fall left her with a broken femur and a dislocated hip. After surgery, doctors warned that even if she walked again, she would likely have a limp.<\/p>\n
\u201cI just started crying. I said, this can\u2019t be the end,\u201d Blumenthal said.<\/p>\n
Determined to recover, Blumenthal began physical therapy just days after surgery. During one session, she saw another woman performing an exercise and decided she wanted to try it herself.<\/p>\n
\u201cI saw this lady doing a wheel. I was like, I\u2019m doing that. And I did,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
After completing physical therapy, Blumenthal joined 405 Fortitude Strength and Conditioning, where her determination quickly caught the attention of her trainers.<\/p>\n
Her coach encouraged her to consider competing in powerlifting.<\/p>\n
About a year after her surgery, Blumenthal entered a powerlifting competition for seniors.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd I won,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
The experience sparked a new passion.<\/p>\n
\u201cI go, when\u2019s my next competition? I\u2019m ready,\u201d Blumenthal said.<\/p>\n
With the help of her coach, Chase, she entered the Senior Games, where she deadlifted 225 pounds and won.<\/p>\n
That victory qualified her for the Olympia competition in Las Vegas on Sept. 25.<\/p>\n
Blumenthal was the oldest competitor in her division but still came out on top.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd I won by 16 points,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
What began as a devastating injury has become a source of strength and accomplishment for Blumenthal.<\/p>\n
\u201cOh my gosh, I just did that,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Glover was also recognized Tuesday during the Oklahoma City Council meeting with the Pam Henry Media Award.<\/p>\n
The Mayor\u2019s Committee on Disability Concerns selected Glover as this year\u2019s recipient in recognition of his Something Good segments highlighting individuals with disabilities.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
