Plenty of times, actually. This year marked his 10th start at the 2026 Ironman World Championship, and more than four decades of endurance competition had given him a good understanding of what his 83-year-old body could handle.

Kona reminded him that experience doesn’t grant immunity to a bad day.

Plant began having severe cramps in his quads and hamstrings during the bike portion of the race. He believes insufficient sodium was the primary reason, and mechanical issues compounded the problem when his chain repeatedly came loose. Each stop cost his precious time, but he didn’t realize how much until he finally reached the second transition and received news he’s never heard during an Ironman.

He had missed the bike cutoff by three minutes. His day was over.

For a triathlon Hall of Famer with seven Kona-age-group podium finishes, and 20 USA Triathlon national titles, a DNF could provide reason for second-guessing himself. But that isn’t how he’s wired.

“I just turn the page,” Plant told Muscle & Fitness. “I’ve learned something, and I’m ready to get going again.”

There wasn’t any self-pity attached to his responses around the end result. Plant believes he prepared the same way he had for his prior trips to Hawaii, only this time the clock won.

“Stuff happens like that,” he said. “You have to accept it and learn from the experience.”

That mindset helps explain as much about Plant’s athletic longevity as any training program could. He still wants to improve and remains competitive enough to care about his performance, but the decades of knowledge have taught him that surviving in the game requires knowing when to push, when to recover, and when yesterday needs to simply remain yesterday.

Bob Plant

Longevity Teaches You When Enough Is Enough

Plant considers himself a “minimalist trainer,” which sounds contradictory for someone who decides to line up for an Ironman.

Plant says even his friends are surprised by how much he can accomplish without the training volume you come to expect from any endurance competition. But the objective stopped being proving how much work he could put into training a long time ago.

“I’m in it for longevity,” he said.

A typical week now includes two workouts for each triathlon discipline. That’s swimming, cycling, and running. Perhaps the most important day in this routine is the one where he does absolutely nothing.

That day is nonnegotiable.

“I take one day completely off, whether I need it or not,” Plant said. “Because if I don’t take that day off, two days later, I wish I did.

For Plant, aging doesn’t necessarily mean that he’s forgotten how to work hard. It’s about knowing what the bill is that comes afterward.

“The biggest difference is you need more recovery time,” he said. “You might be able to do similar physical things that you did 10 years ago, but you’re going to need more than one day to recover. You’re probably going to need two or three days to recover.”

It’s that reality that has shaped how he thinks about training. Plant no longer does speed work because the potential injury risk and added stress aren’t worth any potential gains. Most of his work now places a priority on endurance while staying within limits he has learned over a lifetime of experience.

The discipline is knowing those limits without using age as an excuse to avoid doing anything difficult. Plant’s philosophy is listening to his body closely, so it never has to scream for his attention. Recovery isn’t lost training time. It’s when the previous session becomes useful.

“That’s when you get strong—is when you rest,” he said. “You have to repair your body and give it a chance to benefit from your hard workouts.”

Kona has only reinforced that there are other variables to manage. Plant had never missed a cutoff before. He had completed enough races on the island to believe he understood what the conditions required.

He doesn’t view that as evidence that it’s time to stop. It’s another piece of information for an athlete who still views himself as a work in progress.

Strength Still Matters More Than Ever

For everything Plant has learned about endurance, there is one part of his current fitness that does bother him some.

He wants his muscle back.

Before the pandemic, strength training was a consistent fixture in Plant’s routine. He would get into the gym up to three times a week, sometimes getting a lift in right after a run. When that routine disappeared as gyms closed during covid, it never fully returned.

Plant said he could see and feel the difference.

“I think I’ve lost about–maybe just age as well–but a good seven pounds of muscle mass because I’ve not been in the gym much,” he said.

The number matters less to him than what also left with that muscle loss. Plant notices less power in his legs than he had five years ago. He still goes through his core work, stretches, and trains at home. It just can’t consistently replicate what resistance training once provided. He did acknowledge that he intends on lifting again during the winter.

Returning to strength work isn’t about hitting his max anymore or even seeing how much weight he can move. It’s about preserving what allows him to continue doing the activities he enjoys.

Movement Is the Point

Plant doesn’t spend his days recovering at home in between training sessions. He still works full-time as a dentist, a career he has been in for 55 years.

Four days a week can mean arriving at the office around 7 in the morning and remaining there until after 5 p.m. On many of those evenings, he heads home to train. As he sees it, the relationship between work and fitness is mutually beneficial.

A demanding career does limit the amount of time he can dedicate to training, but Plant believes this helps protect him from overtraining. In return, his fitness gives him the physical and mental stamina to handle days in which his patients expect his complete attention regardless of how he feels.

“You just can’t say, ‘Oh, I’m going to do an average job today,’” Plant joked.

With a full day of work, there is always a reason to skip working out afterward. Like most people, Plant knows what happens once someone gets home, sits in their favorite chair, and starts negotiating with themselves about pushing their workout to another day.

He also knows what happened to him when one form of training disappeared from his own routine. The loss of strength after getting away from the gym has served as a personal reminder that physical capability isn’t something the body promises to preserve indefinitely.

“You stop doing something that you’ve been doing for a while, and you can tell the difference,” Plant said. “No doubt about it.”

Plant doesn’t expect everyone who hears his story to sign up for an Ironman. In fact, he encourages people to walk, run a 5k, or begin lifting weights. Simply find something you enjoy enough to continue doing it.

“Whether you’re walking or you’re doing some activity, just get out there and get your body moving,” he said.

He has seen people around him take versions of that message and make it their own. Someone will start exercising or complete a race and will tell Plant what they accomplished. It’s those moments that seem to matter more to him than his own results because they confirm that his example can open a door without requiring anyone to follow him through 140.6 miles.

“If I can do it at my age, surely you can do something,” Plant said. “I just encourage them to somehow look at the possibilities.”

The physical benefits are obvious, but Plant believes movement gives him something just as valuable psychologically. Training has taught him that he can tolerate discomfort, overcome difficult situations, and keep going when something doesn’t go according to plan.

That goes far beyond any finishing time.

“It gives you confidence,” Plant said. “You can handle an Ironman or whatever, you can handle other things in your life that may have seemed big before, but now they’re not.”

Plant would have loved to finish in Kona. He believed he could have continued if he had been allowed through transition, but the cutoff didn’t care about what potential outcomes might have been. Three minutes ended his day.

Plant accepted it. He learned what he could from his cramps, the mechanical issues, and a cutoff he had never previously needed to think about.

Then he did what more than four decades in endurance sports have taught him to do.

He turned the page.

“I’ll continue as long as I can,” he said. “As long as it’s fun.”

Goal: Build lower-body strength, core stability, and aerobic capacity without turning every session into a maximal effort.

Time: 35–40 minutes
Equipment: Dumbbells or kettlebells, bench or box, cardio machine or open space

Warmup: 5 Minutes

Move continuously at an easy pace:

March or Easy Bike: 1 minute

Bodyweight Squat: 10 reps

Reverse Lunge: 6 per side

Hip Hinge: 10 reps

Arm Circle: 10 (each direction)

Calf Raise: 15 reps

Repeat once.

Plant repeatedly emphasized listening to the body and giving it enough time to handle the work.
